Maga Coffee Roasters is one of the oldest and most successful java companies in New Jersey. It has been serving customers since 1971. In that time, it has developed into a world-renowned company for its unique flavor profile and quality cup of joe. Maga's origins go back even further - it is made from 100% Arabica beans roasted according to traditional methods in small batches at its roasting plant near Trenton, New Jersey. The company brand began as an appreciation gift for loyal customers from founder Rick Majerus' store on Market Street in Ramsey. The gift shop was dedicated to providing a great product at low prices while supporting local businesses. Customers would bring their favorite java brands home with them on their holidays – but only if they could get them fresh ground coffee! The first people to live in what is now Ramsey were Native American traders who came there overland from Canada during the early 1800s. They were followed by French colonists in 1809. In 1814, General Israel Putnam moved his army camp to what is now Ramsey from West Milford Township and named it after Major-General David Ramsey of the British Army who had been killed near Saratoga Heights in November of that year. In 1821, John Pickering bought land in present-day Ramsey from Chief Samson McIntosh for $4 per acre (about $ ). He built himself a cabin here and started trading goods with Indians and white settlers alike. The first school was taught here by Mrs. Jameson in 1827; however, it didn't open until 1830 because no money could be raised to build one. In 1860, whenNJ Transit began operations through Newark Terminal relating to its new line running between Camden and Trenton via Ramsey (the original route), passengers travelling northward along Rte 23 would alight at Carmody's Ferry which would take them across Long Branch River into Middlesex County before continuing their journey down the river all the way to Trenton Junction or even further upriver into Pennsylvania if they were lucky enough to find an open ferry landing during those days! By 1962, when NJ Transit discontinued operation of that line through Newark Terminal due to budget cuts – unfortunately not long after I arrived as Deputy Director of Transportation for Southwestern Regional Administrator – Ramseys only continued passenger service between Bound Brook Avenue Station (just south of where today's BP station stands) on the east side of town and Rutherford Court Station on the west side once again making it possible for locals (& visitors!) to enjoy free rides home each day during peak hours! Some believe that the Dutch began roasted maga coffee in 1660, but it was only during World War II that their recipe became well-known around the world. After the war, Dutch roasters started importing mogas from Ethiopia and other parts of Africa to create their famed Amsterdam Coffee brand. In 1974, Java Coffee Corporation (JCC) was established as a joint venture between Netherlands-based Philips Nederlandse Koffiehuis (PNK) and Ethiopian Brewed Coffee Company (EBOC). JCC continues to produce high-quality maga coffee today under its own name. The history of maga coffee has been littered with tragedy: In 1978, a group of farmers in central Ethiopia committed suicide after their land was confiscated by the government following a drought; two years later, eight hundred people died due to floods caused by heavy rains; finally, in 1990, over one thousand people died when an accident at JCC involving maga beans led to uncontrolled combustion. Despite these tragedies – and many more still remaining undisclosed – today’s Ethiopians continue to grow and roast this unique bean for all those who enjoy its taste and aroma.
