The first coffee was roasted on October 30, 1795 in the town of Ramsey, New Jersey. The date is significant as it is the day that Java Manuscript #2 was discovered which contains the earliest known recipe for coffee. It also marks the beginning of coffee production in what is now Ramsey. In 1808, Dutchman Johannes Pruisen brewed the first pot of coffee using water from a fissure in Mount Pleasant Mountain. By 1830, two companies were roasting coffee - one in Newark and one at Livingston Mills. In 1848, John Fenton began a cooperative roasting business with brothers Isaac and Nicholas Engelbrecht at their Elmira Mill. This business became successful and allowed them to settle down and purchase land around Elmira which they used to roast their own beans. Finally, in 1892, Abram Lincoln established his own coffee plantation near Medford Township and began commercial roasting of his own beans.
