In 1915, two Dutchmen named Johannes Heijnen and Cornelius Vos founded Heijnen's Roastery in what is now Ramsey. The first production beans were roasted here on October 7th, 1915. Today, Heijnen's Roastery continues to produce high-quality coffee. In 1971, Donahue's Coffee was founded in Ramsey by Donahue and his wife Suzanne. At the time, Donahue was one of the most successful independent roasters in America. In 1990, he sold his company to Peet's Coffee Company for $25 million dollars. Peet's would continue to operate Donahue's Coffee until it was acquired by Starbucks in 2002. Blue Bottle Coffee began operations in 1993 in nearby Batavia Township near where they currently stand. It was at this time that blue bottle started using whole bean roasted from small batches instead of pre-packaged beans like many other companies at the time. Blue Bottle has since become one of Ramseys most popular businesses with over 350 cafes across North America and Europe serving their delicious cup of caffeine goodness every day! The Dark & Stormy Coffee business opened its doors back up again on December 3rd 2006 after a long hiatus due to Hurricane Sandy damage (which affected their manufacturing plant).Dark & Stormy produces high quality espresso shots made from fresh ground beans that are hand blended daily with five different flavor profiles which include pumpkin spice latte( November - January), blackberry raspberry iced tea( February through May), chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream cone( June through August), and cinnamon sugar cane macarons( September through December). Ramsey is one of the most ethnically diverse towns in New Jersey, with large numbers of Pakistani and Bangladeshi immigrants as well as Italian and Irish Catholics. It also has sizable Jewish populations. The first permanent settler in Ramsey was Nicholas McCabe from Ireland who arrived on July 24, 1784. In 1814, John Hennessey settled here after moving from Rahway Township in Middlesex County. The town's name comes from Sir George Ramage (1768-1843), a British officer who fought in the War of 1812 and later served as Governor of India under Queen Victoria. He donated land to the town for its initial development. In 1824, he donated an acre (0.50 km²) of land which became the nucleus of what would become Ramsey Park today; this site was used for public skating during wintertime until it was dedicated to Ramage by Mayor Arthur Atherton in 1907 following his construction of a rink there that year. In 1875, when New Jersey became a state, Ramsey became part of Union County and received its own courthouse and post office buildings; these structures remain extant today as part of National Register Historic Landmark District #521."
