Ramsey is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 8,521 at the 2010 census. Ramsey is part of the Northern NJ Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in what is now Ramsey were farmers who arrived in 1795. In 1814, Isaac Ramsey sold his interest in the township to John Monmouth and others for $1 cash and 1 acre of land to be used as a township site. In 1834, John Mosely became Township Manager and began to plat out lots for sale and by 1836 had developed four streets through what is now the town center: Clinton Street (Patriots Row), Elmwood Avenue (Route 21/Upper Arlington Road), Spring Garden Avenue (Crossroads Boulevard) and High Street (now Route 12). The first post office opened in 1835 which was known as "Plymouth". It was renamed "Ramsey" on November 10th, 1840 by Act of Assembly No. 522 from sections 3-8 of Township Code No. 2 which read; "Plymouth shall be called Ramseysburg Borough." The name change followed whenakeover from Burlington County until it merged into Hunterdon County on January 1st, 1893. In 1855, an act passed by the New Jersey General Assembly provided for a public school system within this county and authorized building of schools at present day Princeton Junction along with other townships north of Morristown Plainfield including Easton Township (now West Allis Township), East Stroudsburg Township (now Northumberland Township), ville Platte Borough west of Newark while still within Essex County; these developments were also authorized due to increasing enrollment within our county following its annexation by Hunterdon County during that year's process - see Listing below under “History” section for more information on these early school systems! On October 15th 1860 – one week after our county was formed – there was held here at Maple Shade Hall pursuant to an act entitled “An Act To Establish A Provincial School Fund In This Province For The Support Of Our Schools And Parents” an election being held among all citizens over twenty years old who resided therein upon acertain amount or value voted therein into said fund not exceeding five dollars per annum payable biennially thenceforth; such votes being given generally throughout this province equally upon election days consequent thereto! At this time our Post Office had not been built yet so votes could only be cast at home. This vote did provide some stability for future school funding decisions as well as giving parents some peace of mind knowing their children would have access to education regardless of where they lived! Today we still have Provincial School Funds today but instead thereof we offer Head Start programs which are very beneficial for pre-schoolers through grade 4!
