There is no doubt that the National Guard has been a vital part of the United States since its inception. The New Jersey National Guard was activated on July 15, 1776 as part of the Continental Army and fought in many battles during the American Revolution. In 1846, New Jersey became a state and the National Guard was made an integral part of the government. The first national guard unit to be established in Rahway was Company A, 2nd Rahway Infantry Regiment on November 10, 1916. The regiment served throughout World War I and II before being disbanded in 1945. In 1951, Company B (2nd Rahway) was reactivated and served through both wars until it was disbanded in 1957. Today, there are five companies active with the New Jersey National Guard; three battalions (Athletic Militia battalion 1st Battalion at Trenton; 2nd Battalion at Newark), one squadron (1st Squadron at Elizabeth), and one detachment (3rd Battalion at Paterson). Each company has an infantry battalion equipped with machineguns and artillery pieces as well as cavalryman for training purposes only. There are also airmobile units which vary from time to time but always have an infantry component that is able to deploy quickly into any situation or conflict abroad. Rahway is a town in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 20,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Trenton-Ewing, NJ Metropolitan Statistical Area. Rahway is located on Interstate 95 and has a rail station on the Erie Railroad. The first settlers in what would become Rahway were farmers who arrived in 1795 from Scotland. They named their community after Major-General James Robertson's estate near Aberdeen in Scotland. The name was shortened to Rahway during World War II because many people living there had been drafted into the military. In 1824, Nicholas de Rohan built a mill on the river which provided power for his mills and also served as a warehouse for goods coming downriver from Atlantic City and other towns in Monmouth County. In 1882, Jervis & Co., merchants founded an grocery store at 4 Main Street that became one of Monmouth County's most important commercial institutions until it closed its doors in 1978. The store was replaced by First Bank of Rahway which still operates today as a small bank with over $100 million assets under management as of 2018 . In 1918, A&P came to Rahway from Burlington with 55 stores across New York State before moving its operations to Camden two years later where it continued to operate until 1992 when it merged with Sears Roebuck & Co.'s retail division (now Sears Holdings). In 1957, Pfeffer Bros., manufacturers of fruits and vegetables opened their own store at 424 Main Street which played an important role during the subprime mortgage crisis when peasants could no longer afford food prices soaring above costs due to production problems caused by bad weather conditions around the world. Prior to this time local farmers had produced most of what was consumed locally and therefore prices for produce did not rise very high relative to other items such as gasoline which skyrocketed during that time period. On July 1st 1969, First State Bank purchased Pfeffer Bros.' store leaving behind one of Monmouth County's oldest businesses – First National Bank Of Rahway – which continues operation today (as teller number 12) providing banking services both online and through phone lines just outside its old building on Route 9 north of town limits!
