Rahway is a town in Union County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 20,584 at the 2000 census. It is located on the eastern edge of Union County and consists of the villages of Rahway Station and Easton. The first settler in Rahway was George Fenton in 1798. In 1814, he founded Rahway Station on the Hudson River which became an important stop on the Erie Canal. The headquarters for Northern Railroad were located here from 1892 to 1899. In 1881, Rahway incorporated as a village and voted to become a city in 1903 after being approved by voters in two separate referendums. On July 1, 1906, it merged with Easton to form one municipality with a population of 24,903. On May 15, 2009, it was announced that Rahway would be host to the 2010 America's Cup Finals race between Emirates Team Emirates and Oracle Racing because their new stadium would not be ready until 2011 and they could not build another arena until after that year's Super Bowl 50 which took place in Miami Beach (the only other venue available). This made Rahway one of only two towns along with Allentown PA to have hosted an event at both Wembley Stadium (the UK home ground for English rugby union) and MetLife Stadium in Harrisonburg VA during those three years – making it also one of just five American municipalities hosting both events consecutively since 2006 without any break or relocation; breaking this streak was Newark NJ who hosted America's Cup Finals 2-3 days ago at Prudential Center before moving up their game by hosting Star Wars: Galaxy's Edgeexperiences during hands-on blaster fights between Darth Vader & Kylo Ren! Rahway is a town in New Jersey, United States. The population was 27,890 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Monmouth County metropolitan area. The Rahway River forms the town's western border and its namesake river, the Rahway Creek, separates it from Saylorsville to the south and Saddle Brook Township to the north. The first settlers of Rahway were Dutch who arrived in 1664. English colonists also arrived during this time and named the township after General John Forbes, Commander of British troops during the American Revolution. In 1814, as part of an effort to clear land for agriculture near Monmouth Junction on Long Island Sound, farmers found coal seams in what is now Rahway Township and began extracting coal for transportation to Kingston upon Hudson City on Long Island. After several years of work, these miners discovered oil shale under their fields and began extracting oil for local commerce before abandoning their efforts in 1827 because of high costs associated with production technique at that time. The first known reference toRahway was made by Captain George Porter when he visited Haverhill Township (now East Brunswick) on April 8th 1777 while surveying lands east of Rahway Creek between what are now Raymond Avenue and Princeton Avenue}. By 1800 there were over fifty residences within present-day Rahway Township; however only twelve were built due to flooding caused by bad weather each winter which discouraged farming operations until 1825-27 when ice stopped flowing through creek beds creating lakes which froze over most winters therefore allowing settlement despite lack of resources In 1821 Fenton Twp., located northeast cornerof present day Rahway & Northumberland Streets formed out of parts ot Amboy Township & East Brunswick Townships when those towns united under one roof following disputed elections (& Amboy Borough had 3 commissioners instead OF 2). Jan 1st 1824 – all residents moved into new borough/township with new name:RahWAY . On Apr 6th 1830 Samuel Simmons surveyed lot #3 in what is now Woodbridge Township & sold it to Abram Piscatelli for $2 per acre . On Nov 20th 1830 resident James Cusick purchased Lots Nos 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 from Abram Piscatelli for $4 per acre On Dec 1st 1830 James Cusick received homestead donation from his father Abraham Cusick By 1840 there were 305 residences within present day Rahways borders including 131 dwellings on lot #1 along river bank west side just north of current intersection with US 22nd Street In 1850 there were 307 residences within present dayRahways borders including 134 dwellings on lot #1 along river bank west side just north of current intersection with US 22nd Street Rahways achieved incorporated status as a town on March 21st 1860 pursuant to Act No 24 Of 1860 According to Townsquare Media’s “History Burlington County” book - “the incorporation process started slowly as many residents opposed any move away from their farms or homes back home” However – after much discussion among officials – it was decided that “a small village would be better than no village at all” so incorporation proceeded apace and by March 21st 1860 all residents had moved into newly created townships/boroughs such as West Windsor Heights (1861), Cherry Hill (1862), South Orange (1863), Uniondale (1864), Edison (1865), Mount Laurel (1866), Toms River (1867) & finallyRahways itself which opened its doors January 1st 1861″ As mentioned earlier, following annexation by Monmouth County in 1960 rahwys achieved incorporated status as a town according to federal law
