In 1724, Nicholas Teunissen purchased land near Rahway from Nathaniel de Vere for £1000 sterling. The local Quaker community built their first meetinghouse in 1729 on what is now Pine Street (later renamed Maple Street). From this point forward, Rahway was known as "The Township of Rahway".
