Princeton is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 23,151 at the 2010 census. Princeton is one of the ten most populous towns in New Jersey and the third-most populous town in New York City. It straddles the border of Middlesex and Mercer counties and has a land area of 7 square miles (18 km2). The name Princeton was chosen by Governor John Woolridge in 1788 to commemorate King George's grandson, Prince William Henry Stuart, Duke of Marlborough (1714-84). The first settlers in what is now Princeton were two families from Huntingdon Township who arrived on February 14, 1682. They named their new settlement "Pembroke." One family moved away after a year and another family followed them five months later. The first permanent European residents were Dutchmen who landed on May 25, 1685. They named their village "Hudson". In 1701 they sold all their land to English colonists under the terms of the Treaty of Utrecht which ended warfare between Great Britain and France. By 1732 there were 100 Europeans living in Hudson Township. On January 1st, 1776, during the American Revolution more than 50 men from Princeton volunteered for service in Colonel John Sullivan's 3rd Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteers which fought as part of Howe's army against General Washington at Saratoga Springs. After three years of war with no end in sight, Captain John Dickinson led an unsuccessful attempt to cross over Raccoon Creek into British territory on July 12th without orders from headquarters; this event became known as Dickinson's Raid or Newark Relief Expedition. The first schools opened in Hudson Township on October 6th, 1781 when Mrs. Elizabeth White organized a school for seven girls north of where Presbyterian church stood today near Market Square across from Rutgers University campus
