The Princeton coast guard gift history goes back to 1892. The first Coast Guard station in Princeton was established on the East River at 6th and Market Streets. It was part of the New Jersey State Militia and was known as Station #1. In 1912, a new Coast Guard station, located at 5th and Chestnut Streets, was opened. This station served as the Headquarters for all the coast guard stations in New Jersey. In 1941, when the Coast Guard merged with the United States Navy, Station #3 (also located at 5th and Chestnut Streets) became a Naval Reserve base. The Naval Reserve personnel operated equipment from this location until 1954 when it transitioned to Coast Guard service as Station #4 (now called Station #5). From 1954-1968, Station #4 housed both the Training Command for Officer Cadet School and an Auxiliary Patrol Unit which provided security for local beaches during high school vacations. In 1968, after years of operation by both branches of government, Headquarters were transferred from 4th Street to 9th Avenue in Princeton while concurrently construction began on a new Coast Guard station known as HQ9 (pictured below). The site of HQ9 would eventually become home to three different stations: USCG Station Trenton ( Plaza), USCG Point Pleasant Beach ( Old Bridge Road), and USCG Newark ( King’s Highway). In 1978-1979 Hurricane wildly damaged many buildings along Morristown Avenue in Princeton; these damage estimates ranged anywhere from $20K-$300KUSD In 1984 hurricane Donna destroyed several homes adjacent to Trenton CG Station; these damage estimates ranged anywhere between $200K - $350KUSD Hurricane Floyd caused extensive damage along Atlantic Boulevard in Neptune; these damage estimates ranged anywhere between $100K - $500KUSD During its time asStation5(HQ9)HQ9 sustained over 1 million dollars worth ofDamage which included but wasn’t limited to: roofing/gutters etc… just some examples! Since its conversion into a National Coastal Security Service facility on July 1st 2009 Headquarters has been constantly busy with various events such as Gala Dinners hosted by NJGOP Governor Chris Christie attended by dignitaries such as President Obama himself As well concerts given by artists like Jay Z & Justin Timberlake along with numerous other functions incidental or mandated by NCSS
