Pompton Lakes was founded by Samuel Pompton and his family in 1784 as a rural village on the east bank of the Monmouth River. The settlement grew to include nearby areas until 1801 when it became a separate township. In 1838, Pompton Lakes became part of Camden County when it was separated from Middlesex County. The Pompton Lakes School District covers all of the town including portions of Spring Lake and Sandy Hook townships which are located outside of Pompton Lakes proper boundaries but share many services with its residents. The community takes its name from Samuel Pompton who first settled there in 1784 and named it after himself, his brother-in-law John Pomptonsmith and their families' three farms: "Pomeroy", "Pompon" and "Lake". After years of growth due to new development around them (the opening of railroads in 1849), most people abandoned their homes in what is now known as "Old Town" during World War II because they were displaced by military construction projects inland or along Lake Monmouth Boulevard (now US 1). However, there remain some vestiges of Old Town including several businesses that still operate today; two primary examples are Pomponsmith's Drug Store & Bakery (founded 1888) and Bemis Hardware & Forge (established 1886). One day after Hurricane Sandy made landfall on October 29th – just days before the original November 3rd election for township trustees – most residents had already evacuated to higher ground elsewhere within Trenton Township where damage from Sandy was less severe than expected given how close communities like theirs were to shorelines subject to high waves crashing against shoreline properties - something that authorities had warned about since early September based on weather patterns over recent months leading up to landfalling storms such as Hurricane Irene earlier this year which had caused extensive damage near Long Branch Island off Cape May County NJ on August 25th resulting in at least 47 fatalities across eight counties NJ with over $130 million worth total damage done) so people returned home only later that week once roads reopened following repairs done by local crews primarily using old buses used for carrying goods between communities while FEMA provided temporary housing for those unable or unwilling to leave behind property Damage assessments continue through 2016 as well as ongoing restoration efforts currently being carried out by both state DOT/NJDOT teams plus private individuals working closely with government officials
