Pompton Lakes is a village in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 7,569. It is part of the Newark–Trenton Metropolitan Statistical Area. Pompton Lakes was founded by Scots-Irish immigrants in 1798 as a farmstead on the west side of Monmouth Lake. The first postoffice was established in 1802 and the first store in 1812. The village became incorporated as a town on February 14, 1916. On July 1, 2009, Pompton Lakes reverted to its original form as a village after being passed by a vote of residents. Pompton Lakes is located at (39.960928, -75.833859). Monmouth Lake lies to the south and east and forms the village's eastern border; White Horse Creek flows through it northwards to join Hackensack River to the west.According to the United States Census Bureau, Pompton Lakes has a total area of , all land. Pompton Lakes is a small town in southern New Jersey, located on the border of Passaic County and Monmouth County. The population was 3,547 at the 2010 census. Pompton Lakes is part of the Passaic Valley region. The first settler in Pompton Lakes was Isaac Sheffer who arrived in 1795. He founded a farm named "Sheffer's Mills" along with his brother-in-law John Howell and their families. In 1806, Jacob Sheffer bought out Isaac's share of the farm and continued to operate it until his death in 1892. In 1809, Samuel Herridge settled nearby on what is now known as Herridge Road (Route 9). He purchased land from John Howell for $140 dollars and built a cabin which served as a stopping point for travelers travelling between Hackensack and Princeton Junction. It remained in use until about 1860 when it was destroyed by fire. In 1812, Agnes Helmsworth moved to Pompton Lakes from Englewood Cliffs, NJ with her husband James Helmsworth Sr.. They operated a grocery store which became known as "The Helmsworth House". James Jr., Agnes' son, also operated the business until its closure in 1922. After that time it continued to be run by their daughter Dorothy Reed until her death in 1984. From 1924 to 1945, Drury Lane Theatre Company produced plays here using an outdoor stage erected on private property near where the current gymnasium stands today. The company disbanded due to World War II military restrictions on theater production; however, one play produced during this time - "The Lady Vanishes" - still remains unproduced and currently resides on stage at Oneonta State University since 1990 under new management In 1881, George Fenton set up a blacksmith shop at 214 Main Street which he called "Fenton's forge". It later became known as "Plymouth Forge", becoming one of the most popular smiths around for both forged items such as bells and gates etc., and cast iron items such as desks etc..
