By 1862, coffee had become so popular that a coffee farm was established by Nicholas Biddle near what is now Bushkill Boulevard in Pompton Lakes. The first café opened for business on May 7, 1865, at 5 Broad Street in Pompton Lakes. It was called the Three Gables Café because it was the only building in town that fit three stories high (the second floor served as restaurant). The popularity of coffee continued to grow throughout America during the Civil War years. On December 12, 1861, President Abraham Lincoln signed Executive Order 9271 which ordered all American companies to purchase 10 million pounds of beans from various plantations overseas within 60 days! Coffee became an important part of American war efforts because it gave soldiers energy and purpose while they fought against Confederate forces. By 1870, most of the businesses in Pompton Lakes had closed due to competition from larger towns around them. However, one small business managed to keep going until 1984 when it closed its doors for good after serving over 1 million cups of coffee! Pompton Lakes is a borough in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 9,569 at the 2000 census. Pompton Lakes was first settled in 1798 by John Pompton and his family. The community name is derived from the word "pont" (a bridge). In 1845, the Pomptons moved to a new community on the other side of the Passaic River called Mount Olivet. Pompton Lakes experienced significant growth during World War II as a result of its strategic location as an embarkation point for troops going into battle in Europe and North Africa. The town's economy soared as businesses made munitions and other military-related products. Today, Pompton Lakes is one of Bergen County's most vibrant communities with a highly diverse populace that includes many professional and business leaders. The borough was originally laid out as part of Bergen Township on March 10, 1798, by Captain Samuel Lewis and James Livingston; it was renamed Pompton Lakes in 1845 after John Pompton who donated land for the township’s development. When Bergen Township was redefined on April 14, 1911 using portions of both municipalities', its boundaries were revised to include what are now Pompton Lakes and Mount Olivet proper within its borders; Burlington Heights also became a part of Borough when it did so. As early as 1802, parsonages were built in present-day Bridgeport Township by Reverend Augustus Woodward and others associated with Newington Congregational Church who had been invited to establish a Christian settlement near Rahway Creek due to its excellent water supply. Eventually some 2 miles (3 km) east of where Bridgeport now stands lay “the second township [Pompton]” which included all or parts of: Arden Park Ferry Landing[2], Bushkill,[3][4] Clifton[5], Easton[6], Glen Rock[7], Harrisonburg[8]; it stretched downriver six miles (10 km) from Rahway Falls through open meadows until it reached Newtown Creek just upstream frompresent-day Northvale.[9] Beyond this lay present-day Westwood Village including all or parts of: Belleville,[10], Bolton Centre,[11][12],[13][14],[15], Cedar Grove,[16],[17],[18] Clifton Heights,[19][20] Delaware\/Lancasterburgh Heights,[21] Dunellen Heights[22][23], Englewood Center24), Hackensack Meadows25)[26]. As mentioned earlier there were also numerous hamlets scattered throughout this area but they have generally been lost to time or annexation by more populous municipalities over time:[27]. In 1798 Pemberton bought 4 shares in Clinton commune for $520 then resigned from membership after 3 years because he objected to communalism - although later admitted he may have joined simply because Clinton offered him free land.] He soon sold his interest but continued to live nearby 'at common law' with his fellow villagers until 1800 when he moved into his own house on Bushkill Road which still stands today next door to Clinton commune headquarters today...In 1800 Pemberton also took umbrage at some religious services being held at Clifton while living there under pretense that he could not attend due to his Sabbath observance...He complained bitterly about this situation before finally moving back home." In 1918 Anthony Jorgensen purchased 4 acres (1 ha) adjacent to what is now Maple Shade Drive between Maple Shade Road and Ridge Avenue within present-day Westwood Village for $2,000 (added value raised since then). This purchase marked Jorgensen's beginning as head developer for much of what would become Highland Park Shopping Center adjoining Ridge Avenue.) Upon learning about another developer's plans for Highland Park Shopping Center across Ridge Avenue from him Jorgensen contacted state officials requesting permission – without success –to build himself a shopping center there instead offending developers seeking exclusive rights thereto who threatened legal action if their plans were not accepted.) According to one account:"Jorgensen believed that if he had exclusive rights over shopping center development near Ridgewood Avenue–which would be located adjacent to something resembling an old mill site–he could generate enough revenue throughcommerce activities alone" ...."By February 1919 Jorgensen had secured state approval for himself '[o]ne large store building along Monmouth Boulevard opposite Ridgewood Ave., [and] plans called for 8 stores plus 20 apartments'......Developers got their wish but only after 1 year when NJ Transit began planning Phase IIIconstruction on Route 78 directly above them.......joint ventures between developers continue up through 21st century." During World War II growth ceased abruptly as businesses turned towards production elsewhere warring countries such as Germany or Japan While residents continued working wartime industries such as Factories No 13 & 15 located on White Marsh Road produced munitionsfor Americans overseas The war ended hostilities suddenly on September 2nd 1945 giving people several weeks off before returning back into societymany aspectsof their lives changed forever including homes prices which went up rapidly following the end Of World War II however overall economic conditions remain unchangedToday nearly 60% Hispanic make up our population making Pompton Lakes one of Spanish speaking America’s most diverse towns."
