The Point Pleasant Army National Guard Armory was founded in 1892 by Colonel John T. Norris as a military depot for the town of Point Pleasant. The armory served as the town's military garrison until it was destroyed by a fire in 1901. In 1917, the armory became the home of the 1st Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, New Jersey State Militia. When World War II began, the battalion was moved to Fort Dix and then to Camp Hill before being re-organized as Headquarters and Headquarters Company (HHC) 3rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team (3IBCT), 2nd Infantry Division on July 20, 1944. HHC 3IBCT arrived in France on September 15, 1944 and fought its way through Nazi Germany until November 8th when it returned to Belgium after liberating Dunkirk from German occupation. On December 12, 1944, HHC 3IBCT relieved XXXIX Corps at Brest L’Etoile airfield during Operation Overlord and participated in cross-channel landings at Normandy under General Eisenhower's Supreme Commander plan called "D-Day." After Utah Beach operations were complete on June 6th 1945 HHC 3IBCT continued operations along I Corps's perimeter south of Caen until May 7th 1946 when it relieved XXIV Corps at Colleville-sur-Mer airfield. On October 5th 1946 HHC 3IBCT arrived at Millinocket after crossing over from Canada into United States Military Academy storage area to become part of new 1st Infantry Division activated at West Point on October 17th 1946 with 437 officers and men from New Jersey state militia units who had been mobilized for war purposes only. The first unit assigned to 1ID wasHHTC (1IC) 'A' Company which arrived at White Sands Missile Range on April 10 1947 followed by 'B' Company which arrived May 2547; 'C' Company arriving September 15 1948; and finally Headquarters & Headquarters Squadron arrives October 17 1951). In 1957-'58 Reserve Officers Training Corps classes were conducted here for reserve enlisted personnel between 24 months old or younger who had not yet completed their four years active duty serviceRequirements changed again with troop deployments in Vietnam and an increased need for enlisted soldiers with training diversion courses also added resulting in two more companies coming online including Alamo Ranger company which is now based out of Carolina Barracks Texas On February 14 1958 orders were issued redesignating all HQ&HQ squadron as 1st Battalion (New York), 9th Infantry Regiment while all other battalions would be placed within parent regiment On March 26 1958 orders were issued disbanding entire 1IC All reservists must have separation papers that include date of discharge/completion of service obligation etc Reserve officers will continue attend regular army schools but will no longer serve concurrently with NCOs

The Point Pleasant Rifle and Pistol Club was founded in 1855. The first rifle and pistol club meeting occurred on October 17, 1855 at the home of Dr. John Kappelman. The first organized militia unit in the town was formed on November 3, 1856 by order of Colonel John Hickey. The original rifles were .50 caliber Smith & Wesson pistols. In 1860, a cannon was purchased from Stephen Girard and erected in front of the old Presbyterian Church to fire signaling rockets over the town during military exercises. On December 8, 1861, a ballistcron was erected on top of the Presbyterian Church for use in firing artillery shells over town during military drills. In 1865, members of the Point Pleasant Rifle and Pistol Club met to form a new club with arms that could be used for hunting purposes only; this organization became known as "The Riflemen." On May 30th, 1866, Captain James Smeaton Ulysses S. Grant made an appearance at a public meeting dedicated to celebrating the occasion and presented members with two pistols each which he had taken from Confederate General Robert Ewell Atchison's army encampment near Princeton Junction while under parole while awaiting trial for treason against his countryman Abraham Lincoln who had been elected President six months earlier! On July 1st 1870 Commodore David Dixon delivered an address at a meeting dedicated to increasing shotguns production in America due to fears that MexicanGeneral Antonio López de Santa Anna would cross the US-Mexico border with an army 100 times larger than what had been fielded by United States forces during the American Civil War! Commodore Dixon announced plans for building a munitions factory in Point Pleasant that would produce shot guns and cannons as well as ammunition for these factories! This project actually started construction soon afterward but never came to fruition because of financial difficulties!! A second munitions factory opened up downriver called "Montgomery Arms" which eventually produced firearms such as machineguns etc., however it closed down around 1915!! In 1899 Sgt Aloysius Flynn (USMC) donated three Remington No4 shotguns (.20caliber) along with all their necessary tools including stocks, triggers etc., along with other items from his time serving aboard USS Constitution which served throughout World War II!!! These are now on display at Monterey Museum Naval History Center!!!!!

Point Pleasant, New Jersey was originally settled in 1764 by the Monmouthshire colonists. The town was named after the point of land where it stood, and its first post office opened in 1812. After the American Revolution, Point Pleasant became a center for Loyalists during the War of Independence. It was also home to one of America's earliest military installations, Fort Tryon, which served as a headquarters for General George Washington during the war. In 1824, Point Pleasant became an incorporated town and quickly developed into a prosperous community with many businesses and homes. The town experienced significant growth following World War II, when it became an important manufacturing center and grew rapidly in population. In 1959, Point Pleasant merged with neighboring West Deptford to form the current municipality of Point Pleasant Township. Despite its humble beginnings,Point Pleasant has since become one of America's most vibrant communities - both geographically and culturally - thanks to its rich history and thriving economy.
The first white people in Point Pleasant Township were Sir John Hudsons men and their families who arrived in 1764. The town was founded by the Dutch in 1675, and it was named for Captain John Penn, a British soldier who helped lead the English forces against the Dutch at Fort Christina. The town rapidly grew during the 18th century as more and more people came to live there. In 1797, Point Pleasant became a part of New Jersey and its residents voted to rename the township after George Washington. The name stuck until 1925 when it again changed to Point Pleasant Township, NJ.
