In 1949, an airmen's club was founded in Point Pleasant and the USAF Auxiliary Services unit was activated in 1951. Point Pleasant became an active duty USAF station in 1954 and a strategic bomber base in 1957. In 1958, the USAF Research Laboratory was launched at Point Pleasant and it remains one of the most important research institutions within the USAF today. The United States Marine Corps arrived on base during World War II and established Camp Lemonnier adjacent to Point Pleasant in 1947-1948; however, no permanent facilities were built until 1959 when Marines barracks were constructed on station acres east of town. Since its establishment as an operational wing of the USAAF,the United States Air Force Station at Point Pleasant has been home to numerous units which have served our nation with distinction including: 1st Bombardment Wing (later 1st Fighter Wing), 419th Tactical Airlift Squadron (later 459th TAS), 5th Air Division (Air Mobility Command), 329th Troop Carrier Squadron (now 129th TCS) - all part of Ninth Air Force; 331st Missile Squadron (now 131st MISR); 422nd Aerial Logistics Squadron; 445th Troop Carrier Squadron; 463d Intelligence Group Headquarters Detachment; 444th Intelligence Group Headquarters Maintenance detachment; 445th Telecommunications squadron - all part of Twelfth AF In addition to its wide range aerial capabilities, PPL also hosts many ground radar installations including three R-2700D mountain radars, two AN/APG-67E air defence systems and two AN/APG-68C electronic warfare systems along with nine ECHOStar digital weather sensors currently operated by both Army and Coast Guard elements stationed at PPL

Point Pleasant is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Camden-Emmonsburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first known inhabitants of Point Pleasant were Dutch colonists who settled there in 1664. English settlers arrived in 1724 and founded what is now the town of Point Pleasant. In 1728, John Woolley purchased land east of the Hackensack River from Sir George Carteret for £5 per acre. This location became known as Woolley's Corner because it lay on the border between Newark and Elizabethtownships. The town was incorporated on February 14, 1814, by an act of the New Jersey Legislature under which it took its name from General Robert Woolley (1712-1810), one of Major General Edward Braddock's generals at Quebec during that campaign against France. The original point where Fort Mercer now stands was near what is now called Manning Avenue and Borden Road; this location would become known as "Woolleys Corner". On September 12, 1800, a group of men led by Colonel William Ferris erected a cannonball cannon on Cobb Hill to commemorate their victory over French forces at Battle of Monmouth Court House; later renamed Fort Mercer after this event (the fortification still remains today). In 1834–35, Point Pleasant experienced one of the worst droughts in history due to severe cold snaps caused by El Nino weather patterns across much of North America; many homes were destroyed or damaged during that period alone. At its peak in 1835–36, Point Pleasant had a population numbering over 1,500 residents and functioned as both a retail center and farming community with gardens stretching along all sides of Broadway Street northward to Meetinghouse Hill Road eastward to Bound Brook Creek crossings just south of Mill Pond Road/Route 22). Many citizens engaged in agriculture either directly or through partnerships with other businesses such as potters' fields extending into these areas (for example CRH Farms located along Bound Brook Creek opposite Greene's Garden[now home to Peddle State Park]), tanneries (now demolished), haystacks (now converted into storage buildings), sawmills (now converted into apartments) or breweries (Newark Brewing Company built around 1830)[]. The area began experiencing rapid development following World War II when manufacturing jobs moved ashore from Europe following production advances at Chrysler Corporation plants in Lindenwald Township and Rahway Township[].
