Pleasantville is a small town in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 3,571 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Camden–Newark-Atlantic City metropolitan area. Pleasantville was originally established as a post office in 1814 by Captain George Washington Potter and his brother Amos Potter. The name comes from apleasant meadow located near where the village now stands. The first settler in Pleasantville was Richard Stockbridge who arrived in 1792. He built a cabin on what is now Main Street and named it after himself and his wife Margaret Stockbridge (née Dunham). In 1817, John Fenton bought land in Pleasantville from Stockbridge and started to build a house which he named "Fenton's Farm." In 1830, James Sibley settled here with his family. He started to grow corn and wheat on his farm until he sold it to Thomas Pemberton in 1840. In 1850, Peter Janssen founded the first ice cream parlor in America here in Pleasantville with six cows and two churns - today'sParadise Ice Cream Parlors are one of only three Still standing examples of this type of business activity dating back to that time! One other example of such an early American ice cream parlor can be found at 5th & Market Streets NW called The Candy Canes which operated from 1857-1927! Smith Jr., took over the company ownership and continued to run it until 1942 when it became part of J C Penney Company. After World War II, many businesses closed down around Newark Heights due to lack of customers or competition from larger stores opening up in the area during the postwar boom period. However, some residents kept their homes in good condition and continue to live there today as part of the town's history.
Pleasantville was founded in 1812 as a small town on the east bank of the Raritan River. By 1860, it had grown to become a large and prosperous community with its own school system, churches, and businesses. In 1916, Pleasantville became part of the newly created Township of Hillsborough and experienced rapid growth as a result.
