In 1838, a man by the name of Nicholas-Jacques Roque founded the first coffee house in what is now Pleasantville. The Roque Coffee House was located on York Street, just east of present day Route 9. In 1840, Nicholas-Jacques Roque opened a second coffee house on Main Street. This coffee house was known as the "Old Dutch Store." The Old Dutch Store closed its doors in 1847 and was replaced by the Pleasantville Coffee House which still stands today. The first espresso machine was invented in 1945 by Angelo De Benedetti and named after him, De Benedetti espresso machines were popularized throughout Italy beginning in the early 1970s. In 1978, Italian entrepreneur Giancarlo Pecoraro started importing Angelo De Benedetti espresso machines to America and began marketing them under his own name. The first artisan coffee roaster in New Jersey was established by Angelo de Benedetti. In 1980, Pecoraro introduced his own unique roast style to American consumers with his debut release of Strega Velutina Artisan Coffee beans - a blend of medium roast and Bold Italica beans from Italy's largest producer of Arabica beans - at Morris Dairy Market Place in Paramus NJ. Pleasantville was a small town in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States, located between Englewood and Paramus. The population was 2,564 at the 2010 census. The first settlers in Pleasantville were Dutch farmers who arrived around 1686. The name "Pleasantville" is derived from thereek "Pleasant Valley", which means "Valley of Peace". A post office called Pleasantville was established in 1796, and remained in operation until 1876. In 1868, a group of investors bought land north of Pleasantville and founded the village of Paramus. They named it after their home town ofParamus, New Jersey, where they had also grown up. In 1870, they built a school and store in what is now known as the Old Town section of Pleasantville. The Village Hall building still stands today and functions as an historical museum. A new Town Hall was built on Harmon Avenue near the present day High School in 1922-23 by local citizens for use as their municipal offices. It became the permanent seat of government for Pleasantville when Paramus Township (later Englewood Township) formed from parts of Bergen County on November 1, 1927. In 1951-52, construction began on what would become one of America's largest shopping malls when it was purchased by JCPenney Corporation from its founder Sam Walton Sr.. The mall became operational on October 15th 1954 and featured more than 1 million square feet (100 m²) of retail space including 659 stores and restaurants along with two football stadiums – Giants Stadium across the street from where most people shopped while Jets Stadium loomed to the north within walking distance). Many famous brands such as Sears & Roebuck opened locations here including Kmart & General Mills which merged into Macy's Incorporated thirteen years later; JCPenney closed its doors downtown after seventy years but continued to operate its units scattered throughout malls all over America until it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2011;[1] finally Sears Holdings Corp., later Sears Holdings Foundation reopened Kmart Stores inside Curb Your Enthusiasm merchandise store inside One World Trade Center following redevelopment efforts that included spending $1 billion to improve Rutgers University’s Scarlet Knight Stadium which houses both collegiate teams[2]. On September 26th 2013,[3] Sears Holdings announced that it would files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection effective October 5th 2013.[4] The company said that approximately 200 jobs will be cut worldwide associated with closing stores[5].
