Plainfield, New Jersey is a town in Hudson County, New York, United States. The population was 362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New York City Metropolitan Area. Plainfield was founded by colonists from England on July 4, 1765 as a small settlement called "Oswaldsbury". It became a town on December 12, 1814 when it was incorporated as a village. On February 14, 1892, the name of the town was changed to Plainfield and it remained that way until 1954. The first post office in Plainfield was established on March 7, 1795. The first settler to purchase land in what would become Plainfieldsville was Isaac Brockman from London who purchased 5 acres (20 ha) near present-day Livingston Avenue and Old Post Road. He named his tract "Hooksett" after his friend General John Hooker who had commanded an American brigade during the American Revolution. A millrace known as Brookhollow Run ran through what is now plainfield village before being diverted into Allenhurst Creek by developers in the early 19th century for water supplies for their mills in Newark and other towns nearby. The creek's course changed again when Route 9 (the old alignment of Ulysses S Grant Boulevard) was built concurrent with brookhollow run around 1900; today's Allenhurst Creek flows eastward through plainFIELD Village instead of westward throughBrookhollowRun as it did before. In 1813-14 platted grants were made to settlers including Nicholas Simpson (born 1785), Phineas Gage (1786-1837), James Pemberton(1800-1868), Peter Jones(1800-1850) and others near where Egginton Road crosses Delaware River just south of current dayRoute 9 north of what is now Centre Street; these grants provided fertile ground for agriculture but also included areas such as woods/woodlands next to streams which could be used for hunting or fishing; these same holdings are still scattered throughout eastern Hudson County today The first store opened in this area about 1800 by Nicholas Simpson at what is now Delaware Avenue and Orange Street - perhaps one mile south of where Egginton Road crosses Delaware River near modern dayRoute 9 . About 1800 Jonas Beekman set up shop on egginton road between present dayRoute 9 NW and Old Post RdNW corner . The city's first school was built on Wadsworth Road in 1796. It served as a boys' academy until 1811 when it became an girls' academy under the name “Schoolhouse Green” while also serving as a private home for local families. In 1830, the town board voted to become one municipality with a population exceeding 500 residents which happened on October 25th that year when boundaries were changed following an election held to decide whether or not to annex neighboring townships (Allentown and Easton) into the newly formed municipality During its early years as a small town, PlainFIELD did not experience much growth; however over time its infrastructure grew significantly due to its location within easy commuting distance of Philadelphia and other major cities along I-95/I-676 corridor which made it an ideal place to conducting business transactions throughout North America at that time as transportationExpansion wasn't really common back then In 1832 township trustees voted unanimously to annex all three adjacent townships into their own municipal entity making plainFIELD our third largest municipality at that time with a population totaling 612 metered space feet2 including all three municipalities plus Easton annexed circa 1850 resulting in currently having total municipal area size amounting unto 2122 square feet excluding any unincorporated areas

In 1809, Plainfield became part of New Jersey and its boundaries were revised to include what is now Union Township (north).
