Plainfield, New Jersey is a borough in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 12,652 at the 2010 census. The land area is 8.2 square miles (21 km²). The earliest known inhabitants of what is now Plainfield were the Lenape Indians who lived along the Delaware River in present-day Uniontown and Easton. In 1664, English colonists founded the town of Newark on the east side of the Delaware River and named it after their home county of Middlesex. Newark was part of Southwark Township until 1708 when it became a separate township by order of King George II under the name Northbridge Township. When Southwark Township merged with Teaneck in 1834, Plainfield became part of Morris County. PlainFIELD MIDDLE SCHOOL In 1922, Plainfield High School opened as one of three high schools located in Morristown Borough on the west side of Jersey City; Plainfield Borough becoming a borough in 1923 and West Morristown Township becoming an independent municipality within Morris County days later. In 1930, both schools closed due to budget cuts motivated by World War I pacifism which had already started to take its toll on rural municipalities across America that were then being forced to compete with large urban centers for limited resources such as teachers and buildings. It reopened two years later as Plainfields Intermediate School with grades 7-12 following earlier plans for grade 9-12 to be housed adjacent to Plainfields High School during construction between 1924-1925 only for those plans to be scrapped because no permanent building could be found nearby upon completion despite offers from several architects including Edward Litchfield & Sons who would later become well known for designing John F Kennedy's presidential palace in Hyannisport MA A new elementary school was built on Broad Street between Priest Street and Market Street where students continued to attend until 1963 when all grades were moved into Oneonta Middle School which closed five years later due to mergers among different townships within Morris County . It reopened again as plainfield middle school from 1975-1981 after Oneonta's closure but closed again due to merge orders with other townships withinMorrisCounty near Long Branch NJ
