Plainfield, New Jersey is a small town in the southern tip of New Jersey. The population was 7,893 at the 2010 census. It is part of Union County. The town was first settled by Yankees in 1784 as a result of the American Revolution. They named it after General George Washington's farm near Mount Vernon. The first post office in Plainfield was established on October 25, 1814, and was called "Hancock". In 1847, Plainfield became part of Princeton Township and in 1907 it became a separate town charter., The name Plainfield comes from two different places: "PlainField" (now an agricultural area) and "Old Field" (the site where George Washington's estate once stood). The second name may have been derived from one or more English words such as "plain", "fairer", or "feld". The current incarnation of Plainfield began to form with its incorporation as a township on March 15, 1907. At that time, there were just six residents – five men and one woman - who petitioned to be transferred from Princeton Township into their new township because they felt they had more rights than other residents due to their location within the same county boundaries. One resident later said that being a township member gave him more power over his community than being aresident in Princeton Township did because he could vote on all matters affecting the township including budgeting and land usage decisions while also having access to social services which were not available to residents in Princeton Township
