Plainfield, New Jersey is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 26,717 at the 2010 census. The name of the town comes from "plain", meaning "steady" or "stable". In 1773, John Montresor and his brothers founded what is now Plainfield Township on land they had acquired from the Lenape people. The township was formed on July 1, 1775 when it was organized as part of Hunterdon County. It was named for Captain John Plainfield who fought in the American Revolution and received an award from George Washington. On November 3rd 1814, Daniel Webster became the first U.S. Congressman from this area when he won election to the House of Representatives from Middlesex County. From 1821 to 1825 he served in both houses of the New Jersey General Assembly as a Democrat representing Middlesex and Hunterdon Counties. In 1863 Plainfield became one of three towns in Hunterdon County (the others being Woodbridge and East Brunswick) added to form Union Township due to the sudden growth of that county following the Civil War; Uniontowns were established throughout Essex County during that time period becauseHunterdon and Burlington Counties were split between North America (the United States) and Europe (Great Britain). At its peak in 1920 there were over 30 businesses located in Plainfield proper with a population over 50%. Today there are just six businesses located within Plainsville limits- four restaurants/cafés, two health food stores/stores selling prepared foods only, one auto parts store/repair shop - all located within about five miles of each other on Route 14A northbound off Interstate 95. Union Township contained most of what is today Asbury Park Borough before it merged into Monmouth County on August 29th 1984 pursuant to an act entitled An Act To Consolidate Certain Towns In Monmouthshire And Uniontownships And For Other Purposes (Public Law 98-541).

In 1764, the Township of Plainfield was formed from a portion of Middlesex Township. The township had a population of 1,500 and included part of current-day Jersey City. The first settler in Plainfield was Nicholas Decker, who settled on what is now Elmira Avenue in 1764. There were few permanent residents in the township until after the American Revolutionary War when small groups began to arrive looking for new land to settle. In 1814, Plainfield became part of Hoboken Township and by 1828 it had reached its peak with a population of 2,000 people. However, because most people in the township worked within commuting distance or lived in other townships nearby, development slowed down until around 1900 when a series of fires destroyed much of the town center and economic decline followed. Today, there are only a handful of homes remaining from earlier times as well as some used businesses that have been converted into apartments or condos.
