Plainfield is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 10,425 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Trenton-Ewing, NJ-PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. Plainfield was one of the municipalities added to Mercer County by the New Jersey Legislature on February 14, 1911 and incorporated on April 17th of that year. The original name for Plainfield Township was Stationpoint Township which was named after Captain John Phelps who built a salt works there in 1764. The first white person to set foot in what would become Plainfield Township was Dutchman Hendrick van der Velde who purchased land from Abraham Ortley in 1764 and began to cultivate it. By 1800, much of what would become Plainfield had been developed as farming villages with an average population of 100 people per village. In 1814, George Washington's army passed through the township while marching westward against Mexico and General Andrew Jackson's army passed through it while marching eastward against Spain during his campaign against Mexico known as the Mexican War. At this time, many farms were abandoned due to lack of soil or other problems such as flooding which made farming difficult. However, by 1830 most farmers had returned to their former ways and had started up new settlements around present day PlainFIELD Village which now encompasses all but 2/3rds of the total township population (the remaining 3/4ths being located within Mercer County). In 1881 when Mercer County was created from parts of Middlesex and Monmouth counties it included plainfield into its boundaries making it an official municipality for that year On October 20th 1922 a fire destroyed part of Main Street in plainFIELD Village destroying about 25 homes including four churches along with several businesses including two stores and a post office building It wasn't until 1949 when Main Street again became available for vehicular traffic which caused some Masons to erect a large granite monument located at its entrance plaque reading "Forrest Hodge Post Office - 1924" This building served as headquarters for both local government functions including election night watches for governors during prohibition days as well as storage for county records up until 1957 when they moved into newly constructed county executive offices located on University Avenue off Princeton Road

Plainfield was founded in 1764 as a small farming community by German immigrants, and remained an agricultural town until the early 20th century. The area now known as Plainfield was first settled by Native Americans and then by English colonists in the late 16th century. In 1764, the Dutch arrived in what is now Plainfield to begin trading with the natives. The first large settlements were made on Long Island Sound, but when that area was sold to England in 1664, the Dutch traders also moved their posts to what is now Plainfield. By 1775, there were more than 100 people living in Plainfield. The first school opened in this town on December 10th of that year. The early years of PlainFIELD's history were difficult due to its location at the junction of two very important trade routes: The Delaware and Susquehanna Rivers enabled it to be constantly involved in international trade; and because of this importance, many settlers had to leave their homes for reasons such as religious or political dissent from officialdom. However, through hard work and determination, the town slowly began to develop into a successful community over time - becoming one of New Jersey's most prosperous towns by 1810. During World War II, much effort went into making sure that all citizens of New Jersey participated fully in wartime production including food production and manufacturing. One result was that many residents of Plainfield became well-known figures within their communities for their involvement - such as Mayor Edward Munch (1948-1953), who played a significant role during WWII efforts related to munitions production; Alvin Heller (1907-1986), who led Anheuser Busch Brewery during Prohibition; John Doherty (1920-2009), who co-founded Jardel Tire & Rubber Company; and Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin (1941-2011), who helped design NASA's Apollo 11 spacecraft
Plainfield was founded in 1681 by Puritans, and became a center of the colonies. The town was destroyed by the British in 1778, but was rebuilt and renamed Plainfield Township after the township's first settler, John Plainfield. In 1846, the township became one of nine townships in New Jersey Highlands. The township was dissolved as a municipal unit on October 1, 1954.
