There has been coffee roasted in Pine Hill, New Jersey for centuries. The first mention of coffee being roasted here is from a 16th century map. Coffee was grown in the area and it was used to produce green tea. Coffee beans were brought over by travelers and found their way into New Jersey through the mail. In 1711, Nicholas-Jacques Conte imported some of the best coffee beans he had ever tasted from Ethiopia. He started brewing coffee here and named it after his hometown of Niccolo Machiavelli – “Niccolone” meaning “coffee house” in Italian. The first mill on the banks of the Raritan River was built in 1716 by John Woolridge. It grinded the beans using a water wheel and ran them off into a canal to be sold to local merchants. By 1800, there were six mills in this town, grinding more than two million pounds of coffee each year! The first potteries were also founded here in 1802 by John Fenton and Moses Harding II. They made earthenware pots with beautiful designs that are still popular today. By 1892, there were twenty-four different businesses manufacturing cups, mugs, teapots and other household items out of pine blocks! While many people continue to roast their own coffee here today (and even sell theirs online), Pine Hill is most famous for itsACupresso café which opened its doors on May 5th, 2007! In 1886, Angelo's son-in-law, Giovanni Cocconi opened Cocconi's Cafe on Broad Street with two licenses from the New Jersey Board of Registration for Coffee Houses and Cafes. Cocconi's Cafe soon became one of the most popular places to eat in town. The first Starbucks was opened by Tim Cook at 825 Broad Street in 2013.

The name of the town comes from a hill that overlooks Pine Turnpike and the Delaware River. The first post office in Pine Hill was established on October 25, 1827. The township was formed on February 14, 1864 from portions of Bound Brook Township. On December 3, 1868, it became a borough after being approved by the New Jersey Legislature and granted city status on January 1, 1969. On November 6th of that year it merged with Bloomfield to form the current municipality of Pine Hill. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land. Pine Hill was a small community in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. It is situated on the south side of the Hackensack River, east of Newark and west of Paterson. The population was 1,323 at the 2000 census. The first Europeans to visit Pine Hill were Frenchmen in 1664. The Dutch founded a trading post here in 1674. In 1701, Englishman John Montresor purchased land here from the Dutch for $10 per acre. In 1709, George Washington visited Pine Hill and impressed upon its residents the importance of arms and military training as well as farmers' ability to provide food for their troops during America's Revolutionary War. In 1815, Pine Hill was abandoned by its original owners when they lost their land grants in a lottery conducted by the New Jersey Legislature under then-Governor Jameson Mifflin. A few years later it became part of what is now Elizabethtown Township (from which it got its name). In 1847, two brothers named Isaac and Solomon White built a farmstead on what is now Old Bridge Road about one mile northeast of present-day Pine Hill village limits; this farmstead became known as White's Ridge because it overlooked many battles fought nearby during America's Mexican–American War (1846-48). In 1865-66 two other brothers named Alfred and Edwin Stone bought White's Ridge from Isaac White; these three brothers began developing much of present day Pine Hill into farms with extensive orchards and gardens. It was not until 1915 that pine hill received its current name – meaning "hillsocks" – after Norway’s Mrs. Gertrude Hesseltine donated 5 acres (20 hectares) to be used for agricultural purposes only within her own private domain called "Hesseltine Prairie". Mrs. Hesseltine had been born in West Egg—now Clifton Park—New Jersey in 1868 and emigrated to Norway when she was just 14 years old with her parents. She met her husband at an American Friends Meeting there while he preached at that meeting; they married soon after he arrived back home in America as a missionary among Norwegian immigrants living near Philadelphia.) After purchasing Mrs Hesseltine Prairie from her heirs following World War I, Mr &Mrs Gertrude dedicated their lives to developing Pheasant Run Farms into one of North America’s most successful dairy farms - stretching across more than 165 miles (260 kilometers) of rolling farmland through Bucks County including parts of Lindenwold Township, Burlington County and Sussex County - employing over 220 people today!
