Phillipsburg is a small town in the Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,898 at the 2010 census. The earliest known police officer in Phillipsburg was Captain John Geddes who served from 1821 to 1824. In 1826, Constable George Ladd became the first constable of Phillipsburg. In 1868, Captain Cornelius Ryan was appointed captain of the department and later went on to be mayor of Phillipsburg. In 1870, Lieutenant John Whelan became the second lieutenant of the department and then became sheriff of Hunterdon County in 1874. During World War II, Detective Sergeant Harry Greenwald worked for the Phillipsburg Police Department during the war years as an intelligence informant and translator. He also helped draft legislation that established state secrets commission within New Jersey government which would investigate claims of subversive activity by American citizens.

Phillipsburg was first settled in 1784 and has been the site of a number of early American settlements. The town name comes from Englishman John Phillips and his family who came to America in 1785. In 1812, Phillipsburgh became part of the Bergen County township of North Brunswick Township; it remained an unincorporated community until receiving its own ZIP code in 1951. The Town of Philipsburg was incorporated on February 15, 1868, from portions of North Brunswick Township. It consisted of only a few hundred residents at its peak and shrunk to as few as 100 people by 1910 due largely to commuting to nearby Paramus and Hackensack townships for work in the steel mills that were booming during this time. During World War II, Philipsburg played an important role as both an airbase and munitions production center for the war effort with its large arsenal including four artillery batteries and three machine guns. After the war, Philipsburg slowly regained some lost business during the postwar years before decline began again during the late 1990s through 2000s when crime rates soared statewide due to changes in social mores brought about by new waves of immigration into New Jersey. During most recent decades there have been several efforts underway to revitalize Philipsburg which have included planting trees along routes historic transportation corridors such as Route 3A which runs through town Centre Street (now Upper Phillipsburgh Road) tion . On July 1, 1776, Phillipsburg was incorporated as a town in Mercer County, New Jersey. The first settler in Phillipsburg was John Philips. In 1824, the town had a population of 350 people and consisted of a single square mile. On February 19, 1863, Phillipsburg became the capital of Mercer County after Trenton became the capital of New Jersey. On January 29, 1875, the Princeton Daily News announced that Phillipsburg would become the new county seat for Mercer County when Trenton was abandoned as its state capital. The original courthouse still stands today and is used as an event hall by local organizations.
