Phillipsburg is a small town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. Phillipsburg is the county seat of Hunterdon County and the second-largest town in the county. The name "Phillipsburg" comes from English settlers who named it for Colonel John Phillips (1714-1799), an officer in King George's War and American Revolutionary War. The first coffee planter in this area was James Robertson (1759-1827) who grew coffee trees on his farm near what is now Mount Hope Cemetery. By 1812, three men were growing coffee here - Elijah Woodruff (born 1793), Nicholas White (baptized 1795) and John Barclay (1797). In 1824, two more men were brought to this area by Major General David Hoskins - Isham Hockaday and Isaac Butler. Heading up a new day for Dutch traders and farmers along Route 20A – these pioneers had discovered that rich Coffee soils lay fallow below the rapidly flowing streams which provided most of their drinking water needs for irrigation purposes as well as mills to process their beans into smoothies and other beverages. In 1828, Philipsburgh became one of Hunterdon County's seven towns when it was formed from part of Burlington Township following a referendum vote by its residents on November 3rd of that year. At that time, Phillipsburg consisted of just over 100 homes with a population of about 30 people; today it has grown to nearly 4500 residents with over 150 businesses located within its boundaries providing services such as grocery stores, restaurants, gas stations etc., making Phillipsburgh one of the most vibrant community destinations in all of Hunterdon County! The name "Phillipsburg" derives from Colesborough (now part of North Hackensack), one of three villages that made up what was then Huntingdon County. When Huntingdon County was dissolved into Bergen and Essex counties by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on April 14, 1781, Colesborough became part of Bergen Township and remained so until its dissolution as well. When Hunterdon County was formed on February 3, 1821 from portions of Middlesex and Union counties, Phillipsburg came under the new county's jurisdiction. At first it consisted only of a section of northern Hunterdon known today as Philipsburg Heights which stood east of Route 22 between Allenhurst and Bridgewater Boroughs - but this soon grew to include much more territory including what are now parts of Caldwell Township (northwest border), Cranford Township (southwest border), Dumont Township (east border), South Orange Township ( southeast border) and Westwood Borough (northwest corner). On July 1, 1846, Phillipsburgh Heights annexed all but two southeastern sections of Caldwell Township - forming what is now called Peninsula Beach Borough.
