Phillipsburg is a small town located in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,390 at the 2010 census. Phillipsburg has a post office with the ZIP code 07604. The town was founded in 1732 and named for James Phillips, who owned land in the area. The first permanent settler of Phillipsburg was Nicholas White. White built a log cabin on his farmstead in 1733 and constructed a three-story frame house soon after. He also began to cultivate corn and soybeans on his property. By 1736, White had built two more houses along the main road leading into Philipsburg from the west side of what is now Knowlton Avenue. In 1737, he married Anna Maria Kapp and moved to his new home with her and their six children. In 1814, Nicholas White's grandson John died unmarried at age 46; most likely as a result of illness contracted from combat with Native Americans near Monmouth Junction (now Camden). His widow Sarah inherited John's estate including his farmstead and several other properties near Phillipsburg Township where she lived until her death in 1868.. The first school in Phillipsburgh Township opened its doors on October 1st, 1814 when Mrs Kapp donated two boards from her husband's cabin to be used as furniture for an early schoolhouse which stood until 1840 when it burned down due to termites.. On November 12th of that year by an act of the township board James Nolin donated 5 acres (2 ha) of land just east of present day Church Street cornering Main Street to form what is nowPhillipsburgh Cemetery (). This parcel became known as "Goode's Road" or simply "Phillipsburgh". A new school building was erected on this site which served students through 1860 when it fell into disrepair and was replaced by an old strucure which still stands today adjacent to Old Dutch Schoolhouse across Church Street from our present day library/building complex! In 1870 Mrs Hildebrandt donated 100 acres (40 ha) north of Goode’s Road comprising portions of what are now Potter’s Field Park (northwest), Springdale (southwest), Brushy Hillock Village (northeast), Seward Park (east) & Sunrise Valley Farmington Hills Township Park Reserve southward all within sight or reach of Philipsburg proper creating what is now fronting Phillpsburgh Boulevard inside our city limits! The original donation placed nearly entirety within our borders making it one stop shopping for both goods & services !! It should be noted that “Goode’s Road” moniker continued throughout our incorporation as part of formal name change from Hunterdon County Boroughship Incorporation dated July 2nd 1879 thru December 31st 1886!! At no time did anyone residing within PhillipsburgTownship ask for or receive this designation!!! Today we enjoy excellent public transportation options available surrounding us courtesy NJ Transit #927A bus service running every 15 minutes or $2 per ride depending upon timeofday connectable directly to Penn Station providing ample opportunity for purchase discounted tickets online or over the phone prior to departure !! Our downtown core remains connected via pedestrian mall allowing easy access points situated immediately east/ southeast Of Main Street between Victoria Square & Crescent City Plaza !! stroll down Stevens Avenue past local farmers markets showcasing fresh produce direct opposite First Baptist Church plaza before enjoying views across Morristown Lake towards Princeton University campus!!!! All without ever havingto leave your comfortable living accommodations !! Today we have numerous outdoor activities available right outside your door including golf courses neighboring Princeton University (& beyond!), horseback riding anywhere you want countryside style trailsalking lacrosse games etc etc etc!!!!! Phillipsburg was founded in 1788 by Captain John Phillips, a British military officer. The town was named for Colonel James Phillips, who had donated land to the new community. The first store and post office were built in the early 1800s. In 1819, the town was incorporated and began to grow rapidly. By 1830, Phillipsburg had a population of over 1,000 people. In 1836, the town voted to secede from New Jersey and form its own state. The secession movement failed, but the town continued to grow rapidly and soon became a major center of commerce and culture in New Jersey. In 1851, Phillipsburg voters approved annexation by Philadelphia as a suburb of that city. The growth ofPhillipsburg led to problems in the late 19th century. One issue was overcrowding on main streets and sidewalks; this caused traffic congestion and made it difficult for pedestrians or cyclists to get around safely. Another problem was reliance on public transportation instead of cars or bicycles for travel; this caused trainloads of tourists and workers alike to congest local streets during summertime tourist season. Despite these issues, Phillipsburg continued to grow until World War II when it fell victim to warfare-related destruction (the Battle of Gettysburg). As part of Reconstruction after the war, many African Americans moved into Phillipsburg from other parts of Pennsylvania because they were fearful that their presence would lead to discrimination within Philipsburg itself. However, few black residents remained after Reconstruction ended in 1865; most blacks left for better opportunities in other parts of America or outside New Jersey altogether. It is now an all-white township with only a handful thousand residents living there full time as opposed to more than 100 thousand auto/truck commuters who pass through Philipsburgh every day on I-95P
