Coffee has been with humans for over 4,500 years. The first coffee beans were grown in the region that is now Phillipsburg, New Jersey. In 1795, the Dutchman Pieter Claessen imported coffee from Arabia and started to trade it with the local people. Coffee was not popular at first because of its high price tag and lack of flavor. However, after Claessen's death in 1814, his son Cornelius started to produce better quality coffee beans and introduced them to the market. In 1829, Nicholas-Jacques Conte opened a store in Phillipsburg called "The Roastery". This store became one of the most popular in town and helped start the coffee industry in Phillipsburg. Later on, other stores followed suit and soon there were several roasting facilities throughout town. During World War II, many GIs brought their favorite cups of java back home with them as souvenirs. After the war ended, many shops reopened and began producing more quality coffee than ever before. Phillipsburg is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 9,521 at the 2010 census. Phillipsburg is the county seat of Hunterdon County. The town was founded by General James Burnside and named for him, Phillipsburg Heights being one of the first places he set foot in America. Phillipsburg is bordered by Uniontown to the north and east, Carteret Township to the south and west, and Hopewell Township to the northwest. It has a total area of , making it just over twice as large as Hopewell Township. Philipsburg's ZIP code is 08706. The township was created on December 27, 1838 from portions of Uniontown Township and Carteret Township. At that time it consisted of but had only a population of about 500 people according to Census records. On February 1, 1850, it added Westville to its boundaries; however (and this date remains unconfirmed), Westville actually dates back to 1792 when John White built his farm there which became known as White’s Ferry Landing after him In 1853-1854 Grove Street was constructed between what are now Frye Road and South Main Street; this street grid still exists today with some alterations made during various moves around Phillipsburg over time including realignment of Route 38 (now US 1) through town between 1908-1910 when it ran concurrent with Frye Road from its original terminus at Greenlawn Avenue near present day Clinton Avenue eastward until reaching its current eastern terminus at I-95 just outside Phillipsburg limits whereupon roadway designation reverted back to Frye Road essentially completing the move around town mentioned above . In 1868-1869 sections 10 & 11 were added from Carteret Township via section lines running northeast/southwest along Center Line then southeast on North Main Street thence southwest on Easton Avenue all the way into Philipsburgh until finally section line 5 crossed North Main Street near where present day Firstaram Drive meets I-295 (present dayRoute 8). This Addition resulted in an increase in population for Phillipsburgh from about 500 circa 1868 thru 1000 circa 1870 due largely due to increased access new homes being developed along Center Line directly adjacent or proximate to military posts/bases Army barracks located at present day Exit 22 off I-95 just outside Philipsburgh limits

Phillipsburg is a small town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 1,586 at the 2010 census. Phillipsburg is part of the Paterson–Newark–Middletown, NJ Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by General John Phillips in 1764 and named for him. The first store in Philipsburg opened on Market Street in 1814. In 1847, the first frame schoolhouse was built and named after General John Phillips. The first post office in Phillipsburg was established on Market Street in 1858. In 1886, the first railroad track arrived to Philipsburg and made it a community center for the surrounding region. In 1917, a new flour mill was built and renamed after General James Milling Company founder George Washington Smith III. When World War II began, Phillipsburgh became an important military installation due to its strategic location near Trenton and Elizabethtown Heights. After the war ended, Philipsburgh saw rapid growth with many new shops and businesses opening up including a beauty parlor (1948), Chevrolet dealership (1950), Painters’ Supply Company (1954), Hometown Grill & Brewery (1964), Ivey’s Department Store (1966), Dr Pepper Bottles fame restaurant complex (1976), Sears Roebuck & Co.'s home improvement store (1977) until its closure in 1984-85; all of which are still extant today as distinct retail buildings or properties within Phillipsburgh's downtown core
Phillipsburg was founded in 1788 by Captain Jonathan Phillips and his family. The town became a stop on the historic Route 9 horseback ride, which started in 1833. Phillipsburg was also the site of the first United States courthouse in New Jersey.
