The Coast Guard of Phillipsburg, New Jersey was founded on October 1, 1879. The first Coast Guard Station in the town was at the old pier which is now still in use as a marine sciences center. The present station was built in 1942 and replaced an earlier station that had been located on the east side of the township. In 1907, a new station was built to house the lifesaving equipment that had become available from newly acquired submarines. This station became operational and housed both a lifeboat and buoyancy control vessel. In 1963, another new station was constructed to house an electronic beacon system used for tracking ships and other vessels On December 5th, 1978, the Coast Guard Station Phillipsburg changed its name to snack time when it opened its gift shop called "Snack Time". It has been this way ever since. In 2003, a new store annex (known as "The Annex") was added to the Station complex which features additional stores space for all Sector Commands including Headquarters Squadron One (HS1), Flight Deck Squadron Two (FDS2), Life Saving Equipment storage area - with sea-going capability and sonar scanning capabilities - Hurricane Katrina Damage repairs support unit detachment - along with chipper/dive machine service hangar Additionally there is a small training range/amusement park with exercises taking place inside during low tide; also there is an office building complete with cafeteria and showers
