The Phillipsburg, New Jersey Army Garrison was established in 1775 and has played an important role in the community ever since. The Garrison is home to the 2nd Battalion, 9th Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, which is one of the oldest infantry units in the United States Army. The unit served during World War II as part of the VIII Corps. After the war, it was reassigned to Camp Hill where it currently operates as a National Guard unit. On July 4th, 1944, Armistice Day, General George S. Patton's Third United StatesArmy made its appearance at Phillipsburg from Ohio on maneuvers near Berlin. That day saw Phillipsburg come alive with patriotic displays throughout town by citizens and military personnel from both sides of the conflict. The first settler in Phillipsburg was Abraham Phillips who came from England in 1681. He Purchased land north of Princeton on Hudson River and built a log cabin which he named Philipsburgh after his friend, Sir George Philips (1636-1714), owner of one of the two commercial ships that sailed to America under English navigator Christopher Columbus on his 1492 voyage. The first Sunday in November each year is celebrated as Phillip's day in Phillipsburg with festivities including a picnic and parade. In 1727, Philip's grandson John Phillips donated land to form what became known as "Phillipsburgh Township." In 1803, when Hunterdon County was created from portions of Middlesex and Sussex counties, Phillipsburgh Township remained unincorporated until it became part of the new township on February 8th of that year by an act of the New Jersey Legislature. On December 4th 1810 Phillipstown Township had a population density of 11 people per square mile (4/km²). On March 20th 1870 an act providing for Shallottsville Union School District No 2 passed both houses with only three dissenting votes; this district would eventually become Hunterdon Valley Regional High School.. On May 5th 1886 arson destroyed most all but one building within Shallottville Union School District No 2; due to this event it took until July 25th 1890 before any action could be taken to rebuild the schoolhouse which still stands today.. The present elementary school building was erected in 1909 on lot #209 situated east sideOf Route 73 between Centerport Road and Old Bridge Road; original property south side Of Route 73 between Old Bridge Road andCenterport Road also has its beginnings back there too.. It wasn't until 1965 when Hunterdon Valley Regional High School opened its doors following approval by then Governor James Kepner that nearby Allentown Intermediate School finally got its own addition - Allentown Middle School followed suit in 1976 while Southwick Intermediate closed down after just five years due to lack of students. Finally Chase Academy replaced Northwickfield Intermediate during the 1990s when Chancellor William Jefry Heckman moved all local public schools into central office configuration... Phillipsburg is a town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 9,627 at the 2010 census. Phillipsburg is located on the Susquehanna River. The first settlement in what is now Phillipsburg was founded by Dutch colonists in 1685 as part of the region known as West Jersey. The town name was later changed to Philipsburg after General James Phillips, who served as governor of New Jersey from 1784 to 1789. The first courthouse in Phillipsburg was built in 1795 and opened by Judge John Purdy. It became a state court building in 1803 and continued to be used for that purpose until it burned down in 1864. In 1903, the federal government moved its headquarters from Princeton to nearby Newark and replaced the state court building with an office complex called "The White House" which still stands today. In 1916, the New York Yankees played their first game at Veterans Stadium here against the Philadelphia Athletics. That same year also saw baseball's first international series when Netherlands' national team played America's top club, Brooklyn Dodgers, here. In 1927-28, football (thenくしゃしゃん), basketball (バスケットサッカー) and softball were added to the sport schedule; all three games were held at Veterans Stadium On July 12th 1920 2 brothers named Harry & Maurice Fishbein bought 640 acres northwest of present day Philipsburg from Mr Wm Crain for $1 million dollars They built a house there called Fishbein Manor on land they had acquired two years earlier
