The New Jersey Naval Militia was established in 1845 as the first military unit of the new state. It was funded by county taxes and its mission was to protect coastal towns and ports from pirates, smugglers, and other threats to maritime commerce. Perth Amboy, New Jersey is a town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 10,521 at the 2010 census. Perth Amboy is located on the southern tip of Long Island and is bordered by the towns of Elizabeth and West Babylon to the north and east, as well as Babylon Township to the south. It is part of the New York metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1766 by English settlers from London who were looking for a new home after leaving their previous settlement on Staten Island. The name "Perth" comes from an Indian word meaning "peninsula." The earliest residents were Methodists who built a church in 1784. There are now three churches in Perth Amboy: one Baptist, one Methodist and one Catholic. The first post office was established in 1824 and later renamed Perth Amboy (1827). In 1853, Perth Amboy became part of section 8 of Bergen County which merged with Passaic County into that state in 1876. When Bergen County was disbanded in 1911, its lands became part of Middlesex County and Perth Amboy remained within Middlesex until it became an independent municipality on February 3, 1924 when it merged with Elizabethtown Township to form what is now known as Mercer Borough. On July 1st 1915 there was an act by the New Jersey Legislature which created Bethpage Borough within Suffolk county; however this borough never took hold due to lack of support from local officials seeking annexation into Mercer township or Bethpage township proper; instead both municipalities formed together as PerthAmboy Township on February 3rd 1924 becoming one municipality once again under the jurisdiction of Mercer county government while still remaining within Middlesex county government limits - providing much needed services such as education and fire protection to areas surrounding PerthAmboy including Elizabethtown Township adjacent to Lakehurst/Babylon Township
