The first coffee house in Perth Amboy was established in 1814. Over time, other businesses such as grocery stores, night clubs, and a post office were established in Perth Amboy. In 1916, the first Dutch-owned grocery store opened in Perth Amboy. It became the largest store in town until it closed its doors in 1984. In 1951, the first bowling alley opened in Perth Amboy. It continued to be open until it closed its doors in 1998. In 1967, a new hospital was built on Gibson Avenue near Indian Trail Road. It became known as local hospitals until it closed its doors in 1994. In 1977, a movie theater called the Regal Cinemas opened on Broadway Street near Route 9A about 2 miles from downtown Perth Amboy. The theater continued to be open until it closed its doors in 2006. In 1984, the last ice cream shop located within walking distance of downtown Perth Amboy shut down due to competition from more popular restaurants around town.

Perth Amboy is one of the most populous towns in New Jersey and it is also one of the most diverse towns in America. It has a mix of Italian, Irish, Polish and other European descent as well as Native American and African Americans. The town was founded on December 12th 1788 by Captain John Laird and his men when they arrived from Perthshire in Scotland after being lost for ten days during their first voyage of exploration. The name "Perth Amboy" comes from the Gaelic word "Praidhbhich" which means "place where people grow corn." Legend has it that General George Washington and his army stopped at this location while besieging Fort Casimir on May 24th 1775 while supplies were moving through the area between Trenton and Princeton. In 1814, James Kempton built a log cabin in what is now known as Kempton Park which became home to many top officials including Governor Leonard Wood and Mayor John Fenton. In 1906, Perth Amboy incorporated as a township with a population of 10,000 residents. During World War II, Perth Amboy played an important role in manufacturing munitions for the war effort due to its location near Newark Liberty International Airport. Over 20% of all produce grown in Middlesex County was processed here before going into distribution statewide or sold abroad. The community experienced economic decline during the late 1990s after several major projects were cancelled or postponed due to budget cuts by then-Mayor Edward Rendell; however, recent redevelopment efforts have led to renewed vitality within the community

He also introduced papermaking to the area which led to increased trade. In 1813, Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto visited Ecuador and found coffee bean fields near Quito. Coffee was soon being traded between New Spain and Peru and it is said that Pacha Don Francisco Roca tasted the first cup of coffee in 1559. The Dutchman continue to trade with Peru until the mid-18th century when their monopoly was ended by Mexico's cession of New Spain to Spain.
