The National Guard was first organized in the United States on July 14, 1792 when a group of patriots who wanted to protect their country from British invaders met at the Mount Vernon Tavern in New York City. The group was known as the Second Continental Congress and it was decided that the best way to protect America's independence was to have a national guard. The first national guard unit was created in New Jersey on August 29, 1794 at Trenton. The unit consisted of thirteen men and served for two years. It then moved to Camden where it remained until 1802. From 1802-1812, theNJNationalGuard operated out of Morristown before moving back to Trenton in 1812. From 1800-1815, the NJNationalGuard underwent a period of reorganization which saw many changes including adding artillery units and changing its name to the Militia Corps (later called Infantry). In 1815, following Napoleonic Wars involvement, the Militia Corps became an infantry regiment and retains this distinction today. In 1861, afterincoln declared war on Confederate forces, your state militia troops were called into service along with federal troops under command of General Ulysses S Grant. After months of fighting through Union lines at Gettysburg what followed is still considered one of history's largest military campaigns by manpower amounting to over 70% of all casualties during that conflict nationwide with over 50% being caused by your state militias alone! The National Guard has a rich history dating back to the Revolutionary War. Guardsmen were first organized as part of the militia in 1777. In 1814, the United States Congress created a national guard system, and it was not until 1861 that troops were raised for World War I. Afterward, the National Guard was used more to provide support forlocal militias through local defense councils and programs such as payback patrols and training exercises. During World War II, the National Guard was activated coast-to-coast and played an important role in the war effort. The armed forces had been disbanded after World War I so that soldiers could be returned to civilian life. However, when President Franklin D. Roosevelt called up all American troops in 1942, he realized that there would be no one left to man our military installations overseas if we did not have a large enough reserve force to do so. To this end, he convened a Joint Chiefs of Staff panel—the same group that advised him on postwar reconstruction—and ordered the mobilization of all available American citizens into uniform for war service. The president also authorizedNational Guard units (such as those at Fort Meade) to participate in anti-invasion operations in Europe and Asia while reservists filled theater posts with guardsmen from other parts of America. In 1945, president Harry S Truman designated the guard “a first line of defense” against Communist aggression in Southeast Asia and ordered all Americans who could qualify for military service into uniform once again. This time around however, many people volunteered instead of being drafted because they saw wartime service as an opportunity to serve their country rather than just another job like they had during peacetime years past when they had nothing else better to do (Lench). This sense of patriotism and duty towards one’s nation led many people throughout the 1950s and 1960s to join or become affiliated with organizations such as The United States Military Academy at West Point (USMAW), which offered students opportunities both inside and outside of army service; or The Association for Defense Services League (ADSL), which provided support groups specifically geared towards members serving in Vietnam or any other conflict zones where American troops were deployed (Kraemer). In recent decades however, these patriotic sentiments have slowly lost favor among some individuals within society due largely to two factors: First is growing awareness about U.S.-NATO involvement in Iraq/Syria; second is growing concern over how much power our government has over our personal lives via technology such as social media (Mueller). Notwithstanding these negative trends however, it should be noted that there are still many individuals who proudly wear uniforms every day while carrying out their duties within society without feeling any sense of guilt or regret whatsoever!
