The Coast Guard has been in operation in Paterson, New Jersey since 1879. The first Coast Guard Station was established in Paterson in 1881. The present day Coast Guard Station at the corner of First and Market Streets is the responsibility of the New Jersey State Police. The earliest evidence of a coast guard presence in Paterson comes from an article published by the "Paterson Courier" on October 25, 1879. This article reported that a group of men had decided to form a coast guard unit to help protect shipping on the Passaic River. At this time, there were no other forms of law enforcement available to provide security for the riverbank. In 1886, three new stations were established within patERSON: one at Vine and Second Streets, one at Fourth and Pearl Streets, and one at Ninth and Gautier Streets. These stations served asatterms for patrolling the riverbanks between Newark and Princeton. In 1895, a new station was built just east of downtown on Third Street; it became known asthe “Newark Station” after that city's then-governor Richard Stockton donated land for its construction. Throughout its history, the Coast Guard Station has played an important role in crime prevention alongpatERSON's waterfronts. From 1902 until 1984, when it was disbanded due to budget cuts, patrols occurred nightly around dusk whileboats operated silently off shore during daylight hours (known as “Blackwatch Nights”). During these patrols boats would intercept smuggling operations before they could reach land or become public knowledge In 1984, following passage of state legislation authorizing Operation Neptune's Spear – which aimed to disrupt illegal fishing operations off New Jersey's coasts –the Coast Guard discontinued Blackwatch Nights altogether effective September 1st1984.. Since then patrols have consisted onlyof boating traffic during daylight hours includingOperation Sailboat Watch which began on November 5th 2009

The Paterson coast guard gift history began in 1922 when the town of Paterson, New Jersey commissioned a new harbor. The town's first Harbor Master was Capt. John Fenton and his crew. In 1932, Capt. Harry Weitzman became the first Coast Guard Chief in Paterson. He led the staff that developed and directed the harbor program which has continued to be a part of our community ever since. Paterson, New Jersey is a city in New Jersey, United States. The population was 55,702 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Morris County. The first Europeans to visit what is now Paterson were Dutch traders and colonists who arrived there in 1681 and built a trading post called "Hague Fort" on the site of present-day Union Station. In 1714, General George Washington landed his forces at Perth Amboy on Hudson's Bay to menace the French and their Indian allies as they prepared for an attack on Canada. During this time, some of General Washington's men along with local farmers founded what became known as the "Paterson settlement." In 1837, Andrew Jackson was elected president of the United States, becoming one of only two Americans ever to hold office while reaching age sixty-five years old. At that time, Paterson had grown rapidly into a small town with just over 1,000 residents. By 1860 it had reached 4,500 residents and by 1870 it had reached 7,500 residents; during this time period it also became home to two sawmills—one located near downtown and another located northeast of town along Route 9 (now Midtown Road). On September 26th 1871 Hurricane Sandy passed through New York State causing massive damage across much of Atlantic coastalNew Jersey including Paterson where more than $3 million worth of damages were done; as a result many homes were destroyed or lost their roofs due to water intrusion and flooding throughout most neighborhoods which lasted until November 15th when water levels ebbed somewhat allowing access for emergency services. In 1895 Mayor John Hylan proposed thatNJ adopt a new form of currency—the Fractional Currency Act which would replace paper money with silver certificates redeemable at goldsmiths' shops within 100 days after purchase providing an initial investment equal to 10% or $10 cash plus interest at 2%. This act helped spur industry growth in NJ which continued until 1964 when statehood madeNJ an official U.S. state making all federal dollars non-renewable
The Coast Guard has been providing security and support to the American people since 1916. It began as a small group of men enforcing navigation laws on the US East Coast. In 1924, the Coast Guard became an all-volunteer force and began patrolling the entire Pacific Ocean. The first coast guard gift was a set of binoculars. In 1941, the Coast Guard received its own ship, the Cutter CGC Joby. This ship was used to patrol both coasts of America and carry supplies to military bases in California and Oregon. In 1969, Congress passed legislation authorizing the Coast Guard to provide law enforcement services along our country's coastal areas. The following year saw the purchase of two new vessels – USS Constitution (CG-6) and USS John F Kennedy (CG-8). These ships were able to provide much needed assistance during a time when crime rates were high along our coastline. They also served as a symbol of cooperation between different branches of government. Today, we continue to appreciate those who have joined our coast guard and supported us over these years. Many members of the public continue to send gifts such as fishing tackle or boat parts in memory of their loved ones who have served with us.
