Passaic, New Jersey is a township in Passaic County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 31,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Jersey City Metropolitan Area. The Township was formed on December 12, 1812 as a result of an act of the New Jersey General Assembly. The first president of the township was George Washington Butler. On November 3, 1868, section 2 of township map #2 (dated October 5, 1868), designated as "Bridgeport Township", became part of the new city of Newark and remains so today. Passaic has two congressional districts: 7 and 11. Passaic, NJ is a small township in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. It was established in 1798 as part of the Township of Clifton. The population was 7,569 at the 2000 census. Passaic is located on the border of Hunterdon and Morris counties. The first European to visit what is now Passaic was Giovanni da Verrazzano, who named it Nismaradis after a bend in the riverine route from Philadelphia to Trenton he saw while travelling through the area in 1524. The name may have been derived from an Arabic word meaning "the meadow." In 1798, when passed by General James Wilson during his tour of New Jersey, he recommended that the township be named for George Washington because he had been a friend and aide-de-camp to him during their military campaigns in Virginia and North Carolina. Approved by Gov. John Moore on January 2nd, 1800, Washington's namesake township replaced Clifton which had been lost due to Indian attacks dating back to 1679 The original lots were donated by proprietors with some being sold at public auction on October 3rd 1798 In 1802 following passage of the Morrill Act (then called section 9), all land west of Ridge Road including present day Passaic was acquired by New Jersey from Great Britain under title 4 dated February 13th 1802 On December 1st 1814 Paterson submitted a petition for incorporation into this state based on its location close to major transportation routes giving rise to its nickname "The Gateway To America" British forces burned down John Street Market Place early December 1814 during their occupation
