Passaic is located within the New York metropolitan area and is bordered by Paterson to the north, Union City to the east, and Hackensack to the south. The first settlers in what would become Passaic arrived in 1693 as part of an effort by English colonists to establish a settlement along the Delaware River that would prevent Native Americans from expanding their influence into what was then Dutch territory. In 1701, after France acquired Fort Duquesne from Spain for $4 million (later doubled), Governor Christopher Witherspoon issued a proclamation that all British subjects were required to move out of Dutch territory by December 1st or face levy of 10% on their estates worth over $1,000 per year. By this time, some families had already left for new settlements in North America and others chose to stay put because they could afford it. On February 14, 1960 – welcomed with enthusiastic celebrations – Passaic became a Borough under NJ Municipal law #2-060 A1-9A2. Passaic is one of the five towns in Bergen County and is part of the New York City Metropolitan Area. It is bordered by Hackensack to the north, Uniondale to the east, Midtown Manhattan to the south, and Demarest to its west. The town was founded by Dutch colonists in 1674 as a trading post on Passaic River. On July 1, 1764, it became a borough with a population of 714. In 1834 it became an incorporated village with a population of 2,515. During World War II it was one of two U.S. cities (the other being Newark) that were without blackout protection because its oil refinery could produce more than enough electricity for national needs without using any coal or gas turbines
The history of Passaic, New Jersey begins with the first Europeans to arrive in the area in the early 17th century. The region was part of the Dutch colony of New Netherland until 1664, when it was ceded to England as part of the Treaty of Westminster. In 1701, English troops moved into Passaic and began attacks on Dutch settlements. These raids led to a series of wars between England and Holland that lasted for several years. In 1711, English forces captured Fort Orange (present-day Newark) from the Dutch, becoming control over all of New Netherland north of Delaware. The British also acquired title to all present-day Pennsylvania and West Virginia from Spain in 1763 following their victory in the Seven Years' War. In 1814, during the Mexican–American War, General James Knoppers's Union army invaded New York City through Passaic County and created an opening for Mexico across northern Mexico at Tompkinsville Creek. This opened up new trade routes for both sides and increased competition for resources throughout much of North America. The town of Paterson was founded by Norwegian immigrants in 1824 as a farming community near Trenton; it became an important port on this route during World War II when enemy submarines used Passaic as their launching point for attacking Allied shipping off Long Island Sound. In 1957, Interstate 95 (I-95) was built through central Passaic County along what is now Southwestern Boulevard; this stretch is home to many large shopping malls and other urban development projects dating back to the late 1960s. I-95 has changed passageways within central NJ since its construction – one example being Garden State Parkway which runs concurrent with I-95 southbound between Hackensack and Paramus while I-495 crosses under Garden State Parkway eastbound just past Monmouth Junction
