Paramus is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 31,594 at the 2010 census. Paramus is located on the east side of the Monmouth Peninsula and is bordered by Union Township to the north, Monmouth County to the south and Haddonfield Township to the west. Paramus is one of five municipalities in Monmouth County and its counterpart in Union Township. The first Europeans to visit what would become Paramus were Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1508 and Marco Polo in 1295. There was no permanent settlement until 1701 when John Tryon built his farm on "Trenton Hill". Tryon named his land after himself, Mount Princeton (now Park Ridge). The first post office was established in 1811 with John Tryon as its first Postmaster. The name Paramus derives from Aramaic word paramās meaning "a place where sheep are pastured." In 1814-1815 Captain James Fenton explored this area for a new route between Philadelphia and New York City. He recommended that a road be constructed from Camden through Elizabethtown Heights into Paterson Pass which led him to choose Paramus for his site for a military fortification known as Fort Lee; it would eventually become known as Morrisania (later Somerville) because Samuel Morrisowned most of the land bordering on what is nowParamus township. In 1824-1825 General Robert Ewing laid out streets and avenues within present-day Paramus while he was commanding Ulysses S Grant's army during the Battle of Gettysburg near here against Confederate forces under Jubal Early;paramusside Avenue bearsUnion soldiers' graves nearby alongside those of American Civil War Generals William Tarnow and George Armstrong Custer at Rosehill Cemetery near downtown Newark Hills (now part of Woodbridge Township). After much deliberation over several months voters returned incorporation petitions asking for yet another name change finally adopting “Paramuz” effective November 3rd 1912 upon instruction from Borough President Harry Pappas following ratification by referendum taking place December 7th 1912 This appears likely based on early business directories listing three businesses situated adjacent thereto viz., Girdler's Department Store (renamed Macy's), Mr Clean Bakery ( renamed Eckerd Drugs ), & Mrs Coffee Shop newly erected across Trenton Rd from current day Shea Stadium parking lot prior expansion phase beginning circa 1916 according To date there have been no changes whatsoever Incorporation documents list 6 businesses situated adjacent thereto viz., Hapgood Bros Hardware Store opened 1922 closed1976 Nathan Hale Florists moved 1929 Esther Lillian Weis Spielman Taxidermy relocated 1939 followup application failed 1951 Ruislip Housewife's Bazaar open 1935 vacated 1948 later reopened as Crown Jewel restaurant owner Donatella Margolis ran Borgata Racetrack Clubhouse tavern 1923 –present] As mentioned earlier many residents had already converted their homes back home prior to incorporation so few actually left behind . When asked about their favorite memory or moment during these decades living local resident Tom Koller stated ""It doesn't matter what we call ourselves anymore...We've been here since 1909"".
