The Palisades Park Naval Air Station, now the New Jersey Naval Air Warfare Center (NJNWC), was established on October 24, 1942 as a naval air station under the command of Admiral Chester Nimitz. The first planes arrived at Ppalisades on December 1, 1942 and operations began January 3, 1943. The original runway was 2,400 feet long and had a width of 100 feet. There were no hangars or support facilities at Ppalisades; instead, aircraft were stored in tents and hangar-like buildings near the main base. The squadron grew quickly and by May 1945 it had two squadrons with sixty-six planes. On November 15th, 1945 the first jet plane arrived at Ppalasdes when Republic Aviation Model J-9A Panther jets became operational from nearby Wright-Patterson AFB. United States Navy pilots flew these new jets to RAF Cosford in England for evaluation before being delivered back to America on December 5th aboard USS Constellation (CVG 65). In 1946 Lockheed Hudsons replaced piston engines with jet fuel Engines which limited range however made them more seaworthy and faster than piston designs In 1949 USN closed Miketown NAS (now Newark Liberty International Airport) due to budget cuts within the navy however Ppalisades continued flying operations until 1958 when all naval air stations were closed save for one which kept functioning as an advanced fighter training facility known as Miramar NAS & NJNWC until its closure in 1990. currently New York City’s John F Kennedy International Airport is home to both NJNWC & Miramar NAS while also housing USS Enterprise (CVN 73) once used as a Naval Air Station at Palisades Park

In 1777, English Colonel George Washington and his army invaded New Jersey. The British had planned to march down the East Coast, but they were stopped by a small group of American patriots led by General John Burgoyne. Burgoyne retreated back up the Delaware River, leaving behind a large army of Hessians and British troops. Washington quickly called for backup from militia units in New York City and Pennsylvania, and formed an alliance with France. Together, they launched a successful attack on the British forces at Saratoga Springs in October of that year. This victory helped secure independence for America and ended the war with Britain. After Saratoga Springs, Washington began planning his next campaign against the British Empire. He decided to move his headquarters westward, to what is now Philadelphia. In 1780, he occupied Manhattan Island and marched toward Staten Island. On July 14th, he successfully defended Kingston Hill against an invading force commanded by John Montresor. This victory marked the first time American forces had ever inflicted damage on a European battlefield; it also demonstrated Washington's military prowess. In 1781-82, Washington campaigned in Virginia and North Carolina during the War for Independence; this campaign was also a success. In 1782-83 he returned to Philadelphia as commander in chief of American forces in Europe; this job was later given to Philip Schuyler). During these years he developed close relationships with both King George III (of Great Britain) and French Revolutionary leader Louis XVI (of France). When fighting resumed between America and Great Britain following their peace treaty at Paris in 1783, Washington was again engaged on two fronts: at Trenton Bridge across the Delaware River near Princeton (which surrendered after just three days), then crossing into Pennsylvania via Monmouth Junction near Camden (the last major engagement of the war). At Yorktown Heights overlooking Newport News Point on Chesapeake Bay he ordered Major General Nathanael Greene to evacuate all Americans remaining loyal inside Peninsula County before winter set in; this resulted in over 100% casualties among US Forces while Greene managed only 6%. After Yorktown Heights was taken by Ulysses S Grant's Union Army under Robert E Lee during fought known as "The Battle of Gettysburg," many people began calling him "Emancipator" because of how easily control over much of America had shifted from Great Britain to United States hands without any fight or bloodshed - something which still remains controversial even 50 years later!
