From then until 1945, when it was decommissioned, the regiment was based at Fort Monmouth on Long Island. The present-day police department and fire department were founded in 1912 and 1916 respectively; both departments are still located within the boundaries of Palisades Park. On July 4, 1945, Ulysses S. Grant Military Cemetery opened within boundaries of Palisades Park after being donation from Mrs. Anna Pinchot Grant (née Cushing). It is one of only two American cemeteries open to military personnel worldwide (the other being Arlington National Cemetery). Palisades Park is a large, beautiful park in the heart of New Jersey. It was first established in 1857 as a military outpost on the Palisades Heights plateau overlooking the Hudson River. The park has since been home to many different types of sports and recreational activities, including tennis, golf, horseback riding, and swimming. Today, Palisades Park is one of the most popular tourist destinations in New Jersey. The Palisades Heights plateau was first settled by Native Americans in the late 17th century. In 1857, General George Washington placed an artillery battery there to protect against British attack. The area became known as "Fortress Park." The battery was dismantled in 1863 but its cannons still stand today at the side of Interstate 95 near where it once stood. In 1906, President Theodore Roosevelt gave his famous speech "An American Renaissance" at Fort Lee outside of Princeton. During that speech he proposed creating a park along the Hudson River for public use and relaxation. He called for donating land from various farms and plantations along the river's banks so that it could be used for such a purpose. In 1912, Congress enacted legislation establishing Fort Lee Park as part of New York City's newly enlarged metropolitan area (the Bronx had been annexed into New York City earlier that year). Fort Lee Park quickly became one of America's largest parks with over 271 acres (130 hectares) covering much of northern Manhattan and parts of Brooklyn and Queens. Today, Palisades Park features more than 14 miles (23 km) of trails through woodlands, meadows, ponds and lakeside areas; more than 150 baseball diamonds; three soccer fields; two basketball Courts; four sets of weight-lifting racks; three running trackways; two playgrounds; six bars/restaurants; twelve16 outdoor pools/spas; four multi-purpose athletic fields: four softball pitches (two synthetic turf), one hardball pitch (x-turf), one mini-soccer field with goal posts postmarked 1903 CE (!); thirty five6 vehicular traffic lanes divided into eight eastbound lanes on I-95 northbound from exit 9A to exit 10A southbound between Exit 9B & Exit 10C ; eighteen hundred twenty seventy nine thousand visitors annually enjoy all aspects this vast open space each summer months!
The Palisades Park was a park located on the east side of New Jersey in Princeton, Passaic and Union counties. The park was opened in 1868 to provide a place for people of all ages to enjoy nature and exercise. The Palisades Park system included more than 100 acres (40 km2) of land, including Maze Pond, the only artificial lake in New Jersey. In 1916, the park was renamed in honor of General George Washington by then-Governor John D. Rockefeller. In 1923, the Palisades Park Board purchased an additional 8 acres (3 km2) from the Borough of Ewing for $5,000. This land became known as Meadowlands Park and is home to Devils Island today.
