That year, the United States Navy sent a contingent of sailors to help celebrate the birthday of King George VI in Atlantic City. The Naval Station at Camden was used for storage and for training purposes during World War II; however, it wasn't until 1943 that the station became an official naval base. During that year, U.S. Fleet Admiral Chester Nimitz ordered the construction of a new hospital and barracks on Park Avenue in downtown Ocean City. This first major renovation project on Camden Naval Station took place between 1943-1945 under auspices of Commander-in-Chief's Project Neptune. As part of this $34 million project, six blocks east of Main Street were leveled and replaced with two large warships: USS Constitution (CVA-63) and USS Enterprise (CVN-65). These two ships formed part of Destroyer Squadron Eight which patrolled the Atlantic Coast from Jacksonville to Cape May County in support of Allied forces during World War II. Ocean City, New Jersey is a town located on the Delaware Bay in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 66,927. The name "Ocean City" originates from its location on the mouth of the tidal creek Ocean and comes from Dutch words meaning "the ocean." The town's ZIP code is 08247. The first settler in what is now Ocean City was George Washington who founded Fort Mifflin in 1795. In 1834, John Fenton purchased land at mile marker 21 on what is now Atlantic Avenue and built a wooden lighthouse to warn against pirates and other dangers at sea. The current lighthouse was built in 1859 by Captain Isaac Bradley and replaced an earlier structure that had been lost in a storm two years earlier. In 1870, businessman Moses Levy bought some waterfront property along Atlantic Avenue for $1 million dollars and began to develop it into an amusement park called Ocean Park. This became one of the most popular amusement parks in America with rides such as log flumes, carousels, water slides, billiards halls and more. In 1923-24, Levy opened what is now known as Neptune's Beach which offered beachfront access from seaward through a tunnel under the township's Point Pleasant line to his park acrossosher bayou (later renamed Harbor Boulevard). Levy also developed nearby Ridgewood into one of New Jersey's largest cities with over 100 acres (40 hectares) of undeveloped land between Ridgewood Road and Neptune Avenue west of Interstate 95; Ridgewood Ridge Shopping Center petered out after it closed down during World War II but portions have since been redeveloped as apartments complexes including One Ridgewood Place - Ocean City’s tallest building - overlooking downtown OCEAN CITY Crescent Heights development adjacent to harbor boulevard has become home to several high-end retailers including Saks Fifth Avenue Jewelers & Fine Outfitters as well as Macy’s rack full of designer clothes plus 2 restaurants: Zingerman’s Delicatessen adjacent to harbor boulevard offers international cuisine while Eataly + Pizzeriafacing eastward onto plaza offers NY Italian cuisine Sponsored by NJ Devils Hockey Club Assembling all these disparate businesses together must have seemed daunting—but it didn't stop Levy from enjoying continuous success until his death in 1957 at age 92. When Europeans first set foot on the Jersey Shore, they were struck by the vastness of the ocean and its potential for trade. For centuries, the shoreline has been home to an eclectic mix of cultures: people from all over Europe, Asia, and Africa came to live and work in what is now Ocean City. The town was founded on September 26, 1764 by General John Woolridge as a stop on his way to Battle Creek, Michigan. The name may have come from "occhio," meaning "the eye." In 1814, when New York became a state and Ocean City became its capital, it decided to change its name to honor General Lafayette. In 1954, Ocean City consolidated with neighboring Monmouth County and adopted a new form of government known as a township form of government. Prior to this time, Ocean City had two forms of government: one under Governor Hugh Carey (1901-04) and another under Mayor James Hickey (1898-1900). On October 1st 1870 New Jersey legalized gambling with the opening of Atlantic City's first gaming parlor. This led to an influx of people in search of easy money. Business grew rapidly and within five years Ocean City had reached its peak population size with over 25 thousand residents. however during World War II significant decline in industry took place due largely to rationing programs instituted by the US war effort which caused many families residing in town lose their homes or be forced out into the military zone surrounding Newark NJ . Following the war there was growth back into apartments housing many retirees but also increased development nearshore for container shipping making it difficult for locals businesses unitsMunicipal services such as firefighting ambulance response service were introduced although these are no longer offered today because funding is scarce . By 1960 only 10%of working citizens resided within town limits while 80% lived outside it becoming less appealing especially given increasing suburbanization across NJ . However despite this decrease in population much progress has been made since then including updated infrastructure such as streetscaping; boulevard widening; public library addition; new parks; major renovations/updates to schools including sports stadiums etc…. so much that even some who live further away still feel very close kinship with those who call themselves "Oceansiders"
In 1764, when the British landed at Jersey City on July 8, Hessian troops under Colonel George Washington and Lieutenant General John Burgoyne attacked. The British drove the Americans back, but were unable to take control of the city. The Battle of Princeton was fought nearby on July 10, 1764. Jersey City was first settled in 1639 by Dutchmen led by Govan van der Hoorn. The English took over Jersey in 1665, and it became part of New York Colony. In 1803, Jersey City became a U.S. state and it has since been an important commercial center with a population of 41,000 as of 2010. The city is home to the Atlantic Marine Terminal which opened in 1972 and is now the world's largest container port handling more than $100 billion worth of goods each year. In addition to its container terminals, Jersey City also has a number of smaller businesses that support its growing economy including hotels, restaurants and retail stores.
