The history of military gift giving in Ocean City, New Jersey dates back to the early days of the United States. In 1777, George Washington and his troops were stationed in the town for a year while they fought in the American Revolution. While there, he purchased a sword from an Continentals captain named Nicholas Slocum. It is said that Washington was so impressed with the weapon that he ordered one for himself. The following year, when General John Burgoyne surrendered at Saratoga Field, NJ, Slocum gave him a sword as a keepsake. Colonel James Ewing also enjoyed buying gifts for his friends and subordinates during his time as Mayor of Ocean City (1827-1829). One such gift was an old cannonball from Fort Delaware which he donated to the city in 1828. As Naval Officer Commandingship Philadelphia District (NHCOD), ICS(9) Commodore David Farragut visited Ocean City on several occasions during World War II. Each time he awarded certificates of appreciation to civilians and soldiers who had contributed their services to America’s war effort. On one occasion, Commodore Farragut presented a check for $3,000 to local merchants who had collected food items needed by American forces in Europe as part of Operation Neptune’s Spear. Another highlight of my visit occurred when I presided over the awarding of medals and citations at ceremonies associated with Exercise “Husky Days” which took place June 10-12th 1945 off Long Beach Island NJ shoreline During my years serving NHCOD(9), I became well-acquainted with many residents and businesses within walking distance of our naval station located on South Street between Ferry Road and State Street which served as our main shopping center for these resources used by usduring wartime As you can imagine given this situation we operated outside normal courtesies usually expected during peacetime . For example We refused numerous requests from Secret Service agents To present Our awards at official functions ..... even after being advised That doing so would be against regulations One result Of This unusual behavior was That Many Friends And Associates Lost Their Employment But No One Was ever prosecuted or disciplined By The Navy For Political Activities

On December 10th1837 Mormon settlers landed at what is now known as Point Pleasant Beach after leaving their boats anchored offshore while exploring for land grants in what is now New Jersey. After landing they began building their homes prefabricated from logs brought overland from Provo Utah which at that time lay adjacent to Salt Lake Valley . The first Post Office opened at Point Pleasant Beach on February 3rd1838 under charter from Pennsylvania Govt and soon grew into a thriving community with residents engaging in various trades including fishing, farming and shipbuilding . From these beginnings many other businesses were established such as a bakery (owned by John Coleman), hotel (founded by David Levy) and grocery store (owned by Elisha Siegel). Today bothPoint Pleasant Beach Pier & Old Bridge Light House still stand side-by-side displaying impressive 1/2 mile long wharffrontage while being only minutes walk away from all types of shops & dining options open to visitors!
