The Coast Guard has been in Ocean City, New Jersey since 1847. The first Coast Guard station was built on the waterfront in 1857. In 1862, a new station was built on the wide and flat peninsula that forms the eastern shore of Long Beach Island. In 1916, the Coast Guard Station Atterbury was established in what is now Old Bridge Township. The station served as a base for patrols and security for ships at anchor off the coast of Atlantic City. In 1953, the Coast Guard Station Neptune was established in what is now Red Bank Township. Neptune served as a forward headquarters for patrol and security operations along New Jersey's Eastern Shore from its location on South Quay Street in Neptune beach. In 1978, the Coast Guard Station North Cape consisted of two barracks and an office building located on North Avenue in Monmouth County. The station became operational as part of reactivation of Coastal Command which had been disbanded a year earlier. The Headquarters District’s coastal area included both Monmouth County and Bergen County; it also exercised jurisdiction over parts of Camden County and Cumberland County to include Asbury Park, Hackensack, Garden State Parkway (Interstate 95), Woodbridge Township (New Brunswick), Bricktown (Southold) and Elizabethton-Langley Borough (Paterson). After closure of Coastal Command Headquarters Departmental sections were reassigned to various stations throughout NJ with responsibility for duties within their respective areas including Patrol(P-8), Security(S-3), Search And Rescue(SAR-5) . . .

The Coast Guard is responsible for protecting America's coasts and waterways, providing law enforcement services, and rescuing people in distress. This history goes back to 1915 when the first coast guard detachments were stationed at Shark Island and San Pedro Bay in California. Since then, the Coast Guard has grown into one of America's most important public safety organizations. The town of Ocean City was founded on Long Island in 1674 by Quakers and became an important seaport for the New Jersey colony. The town grew rapidly and by 1853 had a population of over 2000. In 1876, the towns of Brick and Atlantic City were merged to form Ocean City. The town's economy shifted from maritime to industrial in the late 19th century as it developed as a major manufacturing center for products such as candy, cigars, cigarettes, rubber goods and shipbuilding. However, during World War II the town experienced extensive destruction due to bombing raids from the United States Air Force; after the war its industry declined again and its population declined until it reached its current level of 1,000 in 2010.
