The United States Air Force has been deployed to many locations in the world, but there is no military deployment of a greater magnitude than the World War II Operation Overlord. The event that took place on D-Day, June 6th, 1944 was an amphibious assault by American and British forces against Nazi Germany’s mobile defenses at Normandy. The task of landing Allied troops on beaches across France and England was successful, but it was also costly. By the end of July 1944, over 1 million Americans had died in combat and another 2 million were wounded. In addition to the human cost, millions more acres were lost to Army landings and air strikes as strategic areas such as Paris were liberated. In order to provide support for Operation Overlord, the United States Air Forces (USAF) placed a large number of gifts within easy reach of local residents. These include fighter aircraft like F-4C Phantom jets and B-17 Flying Fortress bombers; artillery pieces like tanks and anti-tank rifles; vehicles like armored cars and jeeps; food items like gasoline cans or ammunition boxes; and cultural artifacts such as artichokes or jewelry. Additionally, cargo planes ferried supplies from RAF bases in Britain to coastal communities near Normandy. One particular gift that received widespread attention was the Lockheed P-38 Lightning fighter jet. This plane had been designed by Douglas Aircraft Corporation specifically for aerial warfare during World War II. After being delivered to America on May 24th, 1945 serial # 381ZI became operational with the USAF at Seymour Johnson AFB in North Carolina less than two months later on July 16th 1945 after being test flown by Lieutenant Colonel Harry Eberhart Jr., piloting a Lockheed P-38 “Lightning” squadron known as “ flyer Fourteen” operating out of RAF Machynlleth in Wales. The USAAF designated this unit Tactical Air Command (TAC) – which refers back to its origins during World War I when three groups comprising Airmen serving under General John J Pershing flew patrols over German supply lines supplying their army units fighting on the Western Front! Additionally these Squadron pilots would typically fly missions over enemy targets near their home base while maintaining radio contact with higher commanders/commanders responsible for all allied operations not only within TAC but also throughout NATO! According to historian Edward Munchin “the Lockheed P-38 Lightning represented one of history’s great advances both as an aircraft and as an instrument of war because it could simultaneously engage multiple target threats at low altitude without losing its radar lock onto any single target…it became possible for fighters [to] operate effectively beyond visual range against ground targets carrying armor or other heavy weapons although they could not actually kill them!” With this weapon system becoming available squadrons such as Fighter Squadron 133 (F3U) equipped with Lockheed P-38L Lightnings began flying escort duty for Consolidated B-24 Liberators bomber formations transporting supplies into Normandy during Operation Neptune's Spear – code named "Overlord". The fortifications around Ocean City were destroyed during World War II and most of what remains today is a park called Fort Mifflin Park which includes a reconstructed artillery piece dating back to 1681. The cannons now sit inside a replica walled enclosure called Battery Wagner which overlooks Old Dock Road and lower Delaware Bay. Today, Ocean City has emerged as an up-and-coming tourist center with attractions including beaches,achievements within history-based museums such as Point State Park and Glassboro Fortress National Monument, NASCAR races at Dover Downs Speedway and Atlantic City Casino & Resort - home to some of the largest gambling dens in North America - as well as many nightlife options including beach bars and clubs along with restaurants serving seafood from Johns Hopkins University's MD Anderson Cancer Center campus across from downtown Ocean City Beach Boulevard.

It declined during World War II because of military production in nearby Camden and Newark but rebounded after the war due to new development in the town center.
