The Oakland Naval Shipyard was founded in 1887, and it has been continuous in production since then. The shipyards have produced over 200 warships, including the USS Constitution and USS Constitution-class submarines. In 1945, the Navy placed an order for a new class of destroyer, the DDG-51. The first ships were delivered in 1951. Because of its location near Newark Liberty International Airport and its ability to produce warships quickly, the Navy ordered more DDG-51s even though there was no need for them. The navy also placed orders for three amphibious assault ships – USS Yorktown (LHD-3), USS Enterprise (LHD-5) and USS John F Kennedy (LHA-1). These ships are now part of the Coast Guard fleet. The first naval vessel to be built at the Oakland Naval Shipyard was the torpedo boat LST(R) 438 which was launched on December 4th, 1943. The ship had a displacement of 1,500 tons and could travel up to 10 knots speed. It operated as part of Destroyer Squadron 21 during World War II. After the war ended in 1945, LST(R) 438 continued to serve within Destroyer Squadron 26 until she decommissioned on July 1st 1946. She was replaced by LCS(L)-4 which entered service on October 15th 1946 and served until she decommissioned on November 15th 1956. She had a displacement of 467 tons and could travel up to 12 knots speed with a range of 2,000 miles when equipped with two torpedoes launchers or one machine gunner’s Mate position aft along with six torpedo tubes forward and two single mounts amidships for five torpedoes each In 1957, LCS(L)-5 became operational as flagship for Destroyer Squadron 3 while LCS(L)-4 continued serving as squadron flagship from 1957 through 1961 before being transferred back to her original duties as squadron flagship from 1962 through 1966 before returning to service with Destroyer Squadron 3 in 1967 until she decommissioned on September 30th 1969 after serving primarily within that squadron during most of her career
