Oakland, New Jersey is a small town located in Sussex County, New Jersey. The population was 9,711 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Newark-Haledon-Trenton, NJ Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers to Oakland were Dutch and English colonists who arrived in the early 17th century. In 1683, Sir George Carteret and his forces invaded what is now Sussex County and founded Rodney Township on Long Island Sound. They named their new township for General John Burgoyne (Sir George's brother), who had played a significant role in repelling the Spanish Armada during the War of Jenkins' Ear. During the 18th century, many Loyalists fled to America after the American Revolution, including some of those from Newark and Hudson counties. The land around present-day Oakland was bought by Nicholas de la Rochefoucauld in 1798 as part of an effort to keep Loyalists from escaping into Canada during the Revolutionary War. La Rochefoucauld granted surveying rights to three men - John Atherton (a Weehawken native), Samuel Richardson (an Indian trader) and Jeremiah KLINE - in 1800. In 1825, James Madison purchased 621 acres of land east of present-day Oakland from de la Rochefoucauld for $1 million dollars – one of the largest purchases made by Madison during his presidency. He decided that this tract would be used for education purposes rather than farming or housing development; it would eventually become known as University Park Cemetery. In 1892, when Essex County was formed out of portions of Middlesex and Hunterdon counties, Oakland became a separate municipality within Essex County with its own government structure and laws. Located near Newark Liberty International Airport on Interstate 80/US 1 – just south of Philadelphia –Oakland enjoyed high levels of economic growth throughout most of the 20th century due to its proximity to major metropolitan areas; however, it has experienced certain declines since then in terms of population density and economic opportunities

Oakland, New Jersey is a small town in Ocean County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 census, its population was 9,992. The community was founded in 1875 by pioneers who arrived from Essex and Middlesex counties in northeastern Pennsylvania. Oakland became an incorporated town on November 3, 1917. It borders the municipalities of Brick Township to the north and east, West Milford to the south and west, and Neptune City to the northwest. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Oakland were Dutch colonists who set up a trading post there in 1624. In 1764, English settlers began their own investigation of this location after hearing about a rich coal field nearby that they had not yet discovered. They named their new settlement Newark after Lord Newark's estate near Trenton (now part of Mercer County). The first settler built a cabin there on December 5th with help from his brother-in-law Daniel Boone. In 1785 John Armstrong started farming here with seventeen cows and five horses he had bought from Nicholas Trimble at East Orange. In 1825 Newark was incorporated as a borough under the name "Newark". On March 14th of that year it merged into Rockaway Township as one of fourteen townships within Ocean County when it was created from portions of both Rockaway Township and Brick Township following an act passed by the state legislature on April 12th, 1825 AFP v1 p567 which provided for township formation within each “county” where such boundaries had not been fixed by law or custom – Mecosta (now Bellmawr), Monmouth (now Neptune City), Atlantic (then Gloucester Township), Cape May (then Hackensack), Cumberland (later Union)… The merger resulted in increased taxation because more people were moving into these townships; but also caused some resentment because many residents felt they had been left out of decisions made about whom to allow into their communities and how much land they should have! After years of discussion between those living inside the newly formed townships and outside them over issues like education funding and zoning changes, on January 1st, 1830 Newark annexed part of Brick Township which led to heated battle between residents inside Newark proper vs those living outside its boundaries – during this struggle police attendance skyrocketed! According as historian Josephine Devlin: "The fight over annexation only underscored how difficult it was for any newcomer to make headway against established authority." Ultimately though due process prevailed - Rutgers College accepted bricktowner George Whitehead as one its students in 1830 despite objections from locals who saw him as nothing more than an outsider looking to take advantage of their community without offering anything back! On October 15th 1870 Samuel Gibbs purchased 640 acres along Deer Creek Road north-west of present day Oakland for $4 per acre which included parts currently located within present day Brick Township including most notably Spring Hill Farms where colonial era pioneer James Caldwell lived until his death in 1814; later known as Crescent View Park; Maplewood Cemetery; Pleasant Plains Amusement Grounds & Refinery etc.. Gibbs also acquired title to alluvial deposits underlying Deer Creek Valley dating back 6 million years including soils associated with ancient palaeoanthropological sites such as Nuttall’s Landing Site coves #2b &c., Ohlekalhaka Caves A&C., Mill Pond Cave #2a etc….. With this land acquisition Gibbs became oneofthe earliest developersin Morris County – today's Parsippany Borough . In 1847, the first post office in Oakland was established. The town of Oakland was named for General John Eaton, who donated land to the town. In 1868,Oakland became a city and soon had a population of over 10,000 people. The city's first school was constructed in 1870. In 1898, Oakland hosted the World's Fair and it was one of the most popular tourist destinations in America.
