The municipality was created on November 3, 1906 from portions of Princeton Township. North Plainfield is located in the New York metropolitan area. The townships that make up North Plainfield were formed on October 27, 1837 by order of Governor Richard Stockton as part of the consolidation of Middlesex and Sussex counties into a single government. On July 1, 1911, much of what now makes up North Plainfield was annexed by nearby Princeton Township. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all of it land. As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 31,898 people, 10,752 households,[2] 6,711 families residing in the township. The population density was 1,969 inhabitants per square mile (631/km²). There were 11% housing units at an average densityof 753/sq mi (269/km²). North Plainfield, New Jersey is a town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 24,898 at the 2010 census. North Plainfield is one of the most rural towns in New Jersey and has a small-town feel. It is bordered by Hamilton Township to the north and east, Plainsboro Township to the south and west, and Edison Township to the northwest. The first Europeans to visit what is now North Plainfield were Dutch traders who explored this area in 1624-25. In 1764, George Washington passed through this area on his way from Philadelphia to Manhattan when he named it "Paterson Neck". In 1812, Nicholas Moreau set up a gristmill on River Road near what is now North Plainfield High School. Moreau's mill became known as Moreau's Mill because it processed flour from all over Mercer County for local consumption. The mill was destroyed by fire in 1827 but was rebuilt and continued operation until 1895. On November 15, 1777, during the American Revolutionary War (1777-83), British troops burned down part of Northampton Township while looting goods from homes. This event is commonly cited as being one of the first acts of warfare against Americans by Great Britain outside of Boston proper. After Confederation (1867), Northampton Township became part of Mercer County with its own government which lasted until 1912 when it reverted back to township form under statehood laws enacted that year. The original name for Northampton Township was "Easton". In 1892-93 there was an attempt by a group of farmers living along Route 19 between Center Valley and Harrisonburg to create a village called "Fairview". However they failed because no one wanted to move away from their current home which had been built around 1800s mills including those owned by Nicholas Moreau and others in what are now Hamilton Township and Plainsboro Twp., respectively In 1916 Fairview merged with nearby Easton into one new municipality - North Plainfield Borough Council took office on November 15th that year after residents voted overwhelmingly in favor over objections from other municipalities about becoming too large . After World War I (1914-18) things changed quickly as many factories closed or moved out due to wartime competition; however only two schools opened; both were burned down within two years: West Point Elementary School (1921) then Steeles Elementary School (1923). In 1927 Southwick Avenue was designated as Main Street within Municipality boundaries making it possible for businesses open onto MainStreet instead of Streets which would have required rearing fences ; however only four business licenses were issued during 1927 according as compared To 1945 when nearly seventy licenses were granted Thereafter Business License requirements steadily increased throughout the years culminating in 1995 with establishment of Town Hall which still serves today as downtown’s meeting place
The North Plainfield Borough was one of the original municipalities in Bergen County, New Jersey, formed on November 3, 1814. The first meeting of the Borough's board of election supervisors took place on December 6, 1814. It was initially named "Northampton" and then changed to " plainfield". On May 15, 1868, the Borough became a part of the newly created township of East Rutherford. On July 1, 1898, the Township became a part of the new borough. In 1952 it merged with West Orange into one municipality. In 1972 it merged with Paramus into one municipality.
