In 1795, General George Washington and his army passed through the area while besieging Fort Lee on Long Island, and they called the area "New Netherland" because of this. In 1834, North Plainfield became a part of Bergen County and was renamed for Colonel John H. North (1784-1836). In 1849, locomotive engineer George Stephenson built a wagon road from Hackensack to Bayonne through what is now Union Township; this road became known as "the Hudson Line". The town of North Plainfield was formed from parts of Hackensack and Bayonne around that time. The first store opened in 1851 by Matson & Co., which still stands today on Main Street near the train station. The growth of South Jersey during the early 20th century caused development pressure on north side settlements like North Plainfield; however, these pressures did not lead to physical displacement or social upheaval within the community as happened in other towns throughout south Jersey during that time period. Instead,density increased along with job opportunities thanks to railroad construction jobs coming into town during World War II; as a result of this increase in population density, north side businesses grew increasingly competitive with south side businesses over time. North Plainfield is a town in Union County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 24,821 at the 2010 census. North Plainfield was incorporated as a village on May 9, 1868, from portions of Easton and West Plains. The name of the town came from theplain which extended to the east side of the Hackensack River and west side of Union Lake. The first white settlers arrived in North Plainfield in 1784 and they were led by Peter Pappas who set up a permanent farmstead on what is now Route 202 south of present-day North PlainFIELD High School. In 1792 John White settled near present-day Springvale and began raising horses for local delivery to traders along the Passaic River. By 1800 large quantities of coal had been discovered in central New Jersey and small industry developed around this new resource. By 1804, when North Plainfield became part of Union County, there were six businesses in operation: three tanneries (the brickworks ceased operations after 1834), two mills (the first one built in 1814), two shoemakers (one opened around 1830), two wagonmakers (the first wagon shop opened about 1840), and four farmers with 1–4 acres (0–1 hectare) landholdings each. In 1817 an iron works was established at Easton by Nicholas Kulikowsky but it closed within months due to competition from nearby factories. In 1865 parts of West Plains were annexed by North Plainfield; this left only Easton Township remaining as a separate municipality until 1984 when all township boundaries were changed to conform with county lines. Prior to that time most residents withinEaston Township had lived within their own specific agricultural or rural districts although some did commute into larger municipalities such as South Orange or Totowa during times of economic prosperity while others maintained their homespun lifestyle throughout these years. In 1923 both townships amalgamated forming one single municipality called "North Plainfield". This consolidation caused much contention because residents wanted their own elected officials which they felt would be more responsive to their needs while also reducing duplication among municipal services; however these efforts ultimately failed and cooperation continued between the towns until 1984 when it was finally decided that unified government would be better for everyone involved including taxpayers since everything now operates smoother overall thanks to consolidation! The history of North Plainfield goes back over 350 years! As early as 1624 English colonists mentioned “a place call” Newtowne where “some men live” according to one source but no specific location has been found for this early settlement other than it took place near what is today's Union Lake Road intersection northeast of Downtown Newark Airport! It wasn’t until after George Washington’s Farewell Address delivered on April 20th 1796 that any definite evidence surfaced surrounding this potential new home for America because he even mentioned “Newtowne upon Hudson” which may have been referring either directly or indirectly to Newark airport! However further research revealed that this address may not have actually been located at Newtowne but rather closer towards what is now Elizabeth Street/High Street!! What we do know though is that following Washington's Address many people turned their attention towards north plainfields high school area due its proximity thereto & so President James Ketchum ordered General David Greene march his army through town on September 11th 1797 &stown Heights resultedAfter marching through town greening up many homes along the way several miles later Greeneville surrendered without putting up a fight just like Bethlehem days earlier!!! Many historians believe&lightweighted responsibility rested with Nathanael Greene who seemed uninterested or perhaps too busy fighting Lord Cornwallis right outside Philadelphia instead !! After Patriots victory over British forces at Yorktown Virginia many families relocated northward across Great Egg Harbor Creek resulting in what is known as "The Migration" starting around 1800!!" - From History Colorado(2009) pgs 36-37
