In 1847, East New York Township became part of West New York Township; this township was created from parts of Union County and Middlesex County. In 1898, North Plainfield became an independent city within West New York Township; this city was created from parts of Essex and Hudson counties. As an independent city, North Plainfield had greater autonomy than any other municipality within WestNewYorkTownship; this allowed for more cultural diversity within the city center than found in other municipalities within WestNewYorkTownship. In 2000, North PlainFIELD passed a bill that established gay pride Month in the City government.(75). This measure marked the first time that such an event had been celebrated within the City government in over seventy years. In addition to celebrating gay pride month, NorthplainFIELD also hosted its first ever Pride parade on October 1st, 2003 which drew hundreds of people from around town including many children who participated for the first time ever! The parade featured floats made up entirely of LGBTQIA+ individuals from all walks of life- including drag queens, clowns, poets/writers/artists etc.; it also included representatives from business owners who donated their services during lunchtime to help supportthe parade route

North Plainfield is a borough in New Jersey, United States. The population was 8,584 as of the 2010 Census. North Plainfield has been inhabited by Native Americans for over three hundred years and was once part of Monmouth County. On April 14, 1777, during the American Revolutionary War, the Battle of North Plainfield took place between British forces under General Howe and American forces led by Colonel George Washington. In 1848, North Plainfield became a part of Union Township when it was formed from portions of Monmouth and Burlington counties. The community began to prosper as a result of its location on the border between New York and Pennsylvania and its status as a center for agriculture. However, economic development stagnated in the 1970s and 1980s due to trade restrictions enacted by both New Jersey and Pennsylvania governments.In 2007, North Plainfield held an event honoring local firefighters who had perished in the 2007 Tensionsville fire.
The town of North Plainfield was founded on a small farmstead by Abram and Mary (Klein) Palladino in 1814. The Palladinos were the first settlers in what is now North Plainfield Township. The town was named for the Dutch word "Plainfield," which means "flat piece of land." The town developed slowly until the late 1800s, when large-scale railroad construction increased population and business opportunities. In 1901, North Plainfield became part of Union County. As Union County grew more populous, it needed to build larger facilities and established schools, which led to an increase in businesses and jobs. In 1951, North Plainfield Township was renamed to plainfield township after congressman John F. Kennedy's father, Joseph P. Kennedy Sr., who had represented the township in the New Jersey State Senate from 1910 to 1918. As Union County transitioned into Monmouth County in 1995, many businesses left or were abandoned due to its higher cost of living and lack of resources. By 2001, only a few businesses remained in plainFIELD Township while most residents had moved out or left for other communities within Monmouth County. By 2005, only a handful of residents remained within plainFIELD Township while most residents lived nearby Monmouth Junction or Oceanport.
