The first deployment of the modern U.S. military occurred during World War II when America mobilized for the war effort. In recognition of Neptune's Spear, North Plainfield erected a large memorial plaza at mile marker 255 near Izbica Lake known as "Soldiers' Memorial Park." North Plainfield, New Jersey is a town in Union County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 20,759 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Toms River metropolitan area. North Plainfield is located on the border of Monmouth and Union counties and straddles the Delaware River. The first European to visit what is now North Plainfield was Captain John Smith in 1609 during his explorations of America. He named it after his home town of London – Northampton in England – because he found some Native Americans living thereabouts. The location where North Plainfield stands today was then part of Newark Township (now part of Union County). The first Europeans to live here were Dutch settlers who arrived in 1664 and named it "Plainfields". They cleared land for a trading post that they called 'New Amsterdam'. In 1740, English colonists from Sussex County began arriving here as well and renamed the place 'Northampton'. In 1751, when Pennsylvania became an independent state, its legislature changed the name of Trenton to plainfield after its new capital city Philadelphia. During the Revolutionary War, parts of northern New Jersey fought on opposite sides but alledgedly skirmished around this area including one engagement which took place on October 26th 1777 near present day Weequahic Park between Patriot forces commanded by Colonel Thomas Purdy and militia led by Lieutenant Colonel George Washington. In 1834, following instruction from President Andrew Jackson as part of his Reconstruction policy following American Civil War victory over slavery in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley region (the so-called First Non-slaveholding Confederate Territory), Northampton sent delegates to meet with representatives from other towns along Route 33 in Princeton to discuss forming a joint government known as Princeton Junction or Plainsboro until township boundaries could be adjusted resulting in creation of Middlesex Borough withinUnion Township proper; this initiative failed however due to lack support locally among residents eager for separate status quo ante bellum notwithstanding efforts made by their leaders at local level supervised by Township Officials; representative meetings did not resume until 1839 with similar results due to increasing township membership growth thanks largely to waves thereof induced through enticements offered byPhiladelphia businessmen interested in expanding their commercial enterprises into unincorporated areas westward via Old Trenton Road thence southwesterly onto Main Street past Watchung Lake towards Rahway without having first exhausted all legal remedies available thereto prior thereto essentially completing what may have been an actuated political process motivated more by considerations than anything else arising outof developments taking place withinUnion Township itself rather than outside thereof notwithstanding actual or threatened physical destruction or interruption thereto btw village idiotters had already done significant damage circa 1828 plus various other factors making life uncomfortable for residents since before that date practically everything removed excepting maybe 2 houses total buildings Surveyed & No maps taken down prior too
