The history of the New Providence Rifle Club dates back to 1862 when a group of men from that community founded the club in order to purchase rifles and ammunition. The rifle club met monthly until 1875, when it became law-abiding citizens’ organization and ceased meeting. In 1917, the NRA organized the New Providence Rifle Club into an independent society. That year, Johnnie Walker began manufacturing his famous whiskey in nearby Rahway and encouraged members of the NRA to drink his product for its health benefits. In 1954, NRA member Tom Doherty created a commemorative national champion shot put Competition trophy for use by members of the NJRCC. The trophy is now on display at The Range at Rahway Hills in Rahway Township. It was donated by Tom Doherty to the NJRCC by his wife Gayle after she won a gold medal at that competition. In 1966-1967, NRA president Jack Lynch hosted a vacation retreat for wealthy business executives and their families at Asuncion Estate near Trenton which featured rifle shooting demonstrations by local gun clubs from around North America. This was one of many such events held during President Lynch’s tenure as president of the NRA. In 1984, Jack Weisenthal (the son of Dick Weisenthal) purchased land adjacent to where Rahway Hills now stands in order to build what would become known as The Range at Rahway Hills which includes both indoor and outdoor ranges suitable for all types of shooters including target shooting, pistol shooting, rifle shooting, Shotgun practice/firing trials and more! Today’s range was dedicated on November 10th 2009 by Jack Weisenthal with special presentation from then Mayor Jim Aiello!

New Providence was founded in 1736 by the Dutch settlers who arrived in what is now New Jersey. The town was named for Nicholas-Jacques Conte, a French nobleman and member of the Dutch East India Company. Conte had bought land near the Delaware River and built a small brick town on it called Fort Christina. He named it after his wife, Christina von Hessen-Kassel, who bore him two children. The first permanent English settlers in New Jersey were also from Holland. They came overland from England in 1674 and called themselves the "Netherlanders." In 1675, they founded Paramus,NJ; West Orange, NJ; Paterson, NJ; and Brunswick, NJ. All these towns were renamed after their founders – Paramus for Pieter van der Gouw (the first European settler), West Orange for Hendrick de Graaf (the second European settler), Paterson for Cornelius Van Til (the third European settler), and Brunswick for Count Philip III of Spain (the fourth European settler). In 1736, Nicholas-Jacques Conte decided to move his small brick town to what is now New Providence Township. He started construction on a small fort he called Fort Christina and laid out a square block of land around it. The fort served as the center of community life until 1808 when it was replaced by the current courthouse building. In 1809, Governor Thomas Morris granted new land to Nicholas-Jacques Conte at present-day Post Road NW corner Avenue NW. This land included parts of what are now both sides of Market Street NW between First StreetNW and Second StreetNW. The grant allowed Nicholas-Jacques Conte to establish an additional settlement on his original site—New Providence Village—which he did in 1810. The village became an important commercial center during the early 19th century because it lay near major river crossings such as Passaic River east of downtown Newark & west of Rocky Hill Cemetery north of Newark Airport

New Providence is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. It was founded in 1664 by the Huguenots who fled France during the French and Indian War. The original name of the town, "New Haven," was changed to "New Providence" in honor of John Richborough, 2nd Baron Richborough (1624-97), an English gentleman who had been killed while serving as Lieutenant colonel in the English forces at Quebec City. In 1794, when New Jersey became a state, New Providence was incorporated as a borough. The community began to grow rapidly after it was made home to one of the first breweries in America, The Newark Brewery. In 1848, local farmers organized a grain cartel and began marketing their product directly to consumers through stores and public markets throughout the township. By 1870, New Providence had over 200 residents and had built several churches and schools. In 1892, following passage of the National Prohibition Act by Congress, local liquor retailers closed their doors for good due to prohibitionist sentiment within the townspeople. However, with help from brewers like The Newark Brewery and others across the stateline into Pennsylvania that continued production despite Prohibitionism being illegal under U.S. law, New Providence slowly regained its former prosperity albeit with some restrictions placed on alcohol sales until 1951 when statewide Prohibition ended

The town quickly grew and became an important port for New Netherland, becoming a center of commerce and industry. In 1807, the United States acquired New Netherland from Holland and renamed it New York. The town continued to grow, eventually reaching its current population of over 10,000. Today, New Providence is a popular tourist destination with many attractions including its famous pier where visitors can enjoy views of the Atlantic Ocean and Princeton University's campus.
