The United States Naval Service has a long and rich history in New Providence, New Jersey. The town was originally founded by Dutch colonists in 1624 as the "New Netherland" and quickly became a center of maritime trade and commerce. In 1809, the United States acquired this area from Spain to form the Republic of New Jersey. The USN arrived in New Providence on May 5, 1898, two months after the Spanish-American War ended with America's victory. From its inception, the USN played an important role in American naval strategy. During World War II, the Navy employed over 100K sailors and marines here at NAS New Providence. Over 1 million pounds of munitions were unloaded here during that conflict. After the war, NAS New Providence was used as a training ground for future Navy officers and Marines before being mothballed in 1951. However, it wasn't until 1984 that NAS New Providence again saw active service as part of Operation Neptune's Spear – during which time it served as one of four Commandant's Units for Carrier Air Wing Five (CVW-5) executing strategic airstrikes against Iraqi targets inside Iraq’s capital city of Baghdad. Today NASNewProvidence still plays an important role within our military community by providing critical recreational Fleet Activities Support (FAS) services to Sailors stationed onboard USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70). These include providing weather briefings for carrier air wing pilots conducting flight operations; providing liveaboard access to vessel’s sundeck; hosting squadron meetings ashore; conducting availability inspections on behalf of Carrier Air Wing Five; and more!

It includes a wide range of services and capabilities, from the simple tasks oflogistical support to the more complex operations that allow it to maintain its country’s security. The first American military installation in New Providence was Fort Mercer which was built in 1795 by Colonel James Kildare and named for Major-General Sir William Mercer. It was abandoned after only a short time and is now known as Fort Hunterdon State Park.

The town is named for Nicholas-Jacques Conte de la Rovere, 3rd Duke of Parma (New Providence), who died in 1714. The racial makeup of the town was 96% white European American and 2% black or African American;[5][6][7][8] hispanic or Latino made up 3%

The town's rich history is a testament to itsatorium – or economic significance – as well as to the hard work and dedication of its residents. The town's success stem from its location on the Susquehanna River, which made it an important transportation hub and helped make New Providence one of the most prosperous cities in early New Jersey. The city also benefited from its position as a crossroads for commerce and exploration, creating valuable connections with other parts of America. In addition to its economic advantages, New Providence also enjoyed some impressive physical features. Its large square block layout gave the town an air of permanence, contributing to its sense of strategic importance. The town also boasted elegant architecture and streetscapes that remain among the most iconic in all of NJ. Despite these accomplishments, however, New Providence was not without tragedy either during its earliest years or after it became part of the United States. Many smallpox outbreaks struck the town over time, causingsignificant damage and Casualties (C&P) rates that continue to this day. In 1814, another devastating outbreak resulted in more than 100 deaths; this event is still commemorated by a annual commemoration parade called "Notre Dame". Despite these challenges, however, through perseverance and community engagement New Providence slowly regained lost ground throughout much of the 19th century. By 1900 however, things had started to change for the better: according to census reports*, local businesses had begun to thrive again thanks to new investment opportunities brought about by advances in technology.* By 1912*, when New Providence achieved statehood* under President James Kellar*, things were looking up once again! However even while experiencing rapid growth within their borders *during various periods* both Masons & Catholics were persecuted ruthlessly by anti-Catholic zealots known as Know Nothings*. This history should serve as a warning against any Attempts at genuine Community Engagement going forward *. Unfortunately recent events have once again shown just how easily such initiatives can be undone if not properly monitored

In 1764, the British burned down Fort Nassau, which had been established by Dutch settlers in 1624 as a strategic outpost against British attacks. As a result of this event, New Providence lost its importance as a commercial center and slowly emptied over time. However, it continued to be important culturally and architecturally until after World War II when it underwent significant gentrification and development.
