The New Providence National Guard is one of the oldest and most well-funded volunteer organizations in the United States. The organization was founded in 1795, when a group of local political leaders decided to create a militia to protect the town against Native Americans. The first national guard detachment was organized on November 8, 1795. Over time, the New Providence National Guard has become one of the most iconic and respected volunteer organizations in the country. In honor of this legacy, we are proud to report that our organization has history dating back to 1795! Our organization began as a small group of local political leaders who wanted to create a militia to protect their town from Native Americans. This dedication and commitment to our community has led us over time into some pretty amazing milestones. We have played an important role in every major American war since World War II – including both World Wars I and II! Our volunteers also provide critical assistance during times of natural disaster such as Hurricane Sandy. We are truly unique among all volunteer organizations in America – we were founded by local politicians who cared about their community and believed in our mission statement: “to keep the people safe by providing them with military training and resources”

The New Providence National Guard was activated on October 1, 1917. The first duty of the activation was to provide support for the local military forces in World War I. The guard continued its support during World War II and the Korean War. currently, the unit is organized into three detachments: Company A (New Providence), Company B (Atlantic City), and Battalion C (Belmar).
New Providence is a borough in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 9,890 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Hackensack metropolitan area. The first European settlement in what is now Monmouth County was made by British colonists on the tidal island of Rumney in 1764. The name "New Providence" was given to the colony by Sir John Franklin as a way of distinguishing it from his previous base of operations on Northumberland Island which he had named "Providence". In 1814, Captain Nicholas Long and his men were exploring along the Delaware River when they discovered a large island off the southern tip of New Jersey which they named "Island Joe". They found several abandoned Indian villages here and renamed them "New Providence". On November 10, 1814, Governor James Totten issued a proclamation calling for all inhabitants of Islip Township to move to what became known as Staten Island in order to prevent its annexation into New York City following President James K. Polk's Executive Order 9405 that year. In 1815, Totten established an unincorporated community called Whitehall on Isle Joe and ordered all residents there to assemble for military service under General Isaac Brock during the American Revolution. New Providence was founded in 1686 by Dutch traders as a small trading post on the Delaware River. It became an important center of trade andcommerce during the first half of the eighteenth century, and its commercial district attracted the attention of English entrepreneurs. In 1714, New Providence was renamed Fort George after General George Washington, who had served as its commander during the American Revolution. The fort continued to be used as a military outpost until it was destroyed by British forces in 1776. The town gradually evolved into a thriving commercial center, and by 1815 it had become one of the most populous settlements in New Jersey. In that year, New Providence received a charter from the state government to establish a school system. The town's success led to increased development and growth over time, and by 1830 it had attained its present size. By this time, however, Fort George had been abandoned and New Providence's commerce had largely died out. However, local residents continue to maintain some degree of trade with England through their businesses located within the town limits today. In addition to its economic significance, Fort George alsoserved as a popular tourist destination for settlers during this period.
